Hi, I was diagnosed in 2007 with mild aortic stenosis when I was only 41, it is now severe (things worsened quickly and I have two arteries that are 75% blocked and a Left Bundle Branch Block) and I am either getting a TAVR or Mechanical in the next couple of weeks. I am actually leaning towards surgery with mechanical valve (and bypasses) but I am concerned about the lifetime on blood thinners. How are people adjusting to that?

Rita Savelis I'm sorry that you have to go through this. I have had 2 mechanical valves since 2015 (I was 52 at the time) and take anticoagulants. It takes awhile to get used to them and one needs regular blood tests. But I eat what I like and I manage my own meds. I needed mechanical because my heart valves were damaged by radiation and it's best not to have more surgery.

Pamela Gregory Hi Nancy, make sure to get a couple of opinions. There is the Ross procedure (Adam Pick had it as well as many others) which does not require blood thinners. I had my surgery Oct. 2022 at 55 years old. Ended up with biological valve they are hoping will last 15-20 years followed by hopefully TAVR if it will last long enough. They put in a large enough new valve to accommodate TAVR in the future.
