New user on this feed here. I'm 36 and newly diagnosed w/ MVP and moderate-severe mitral regurgtation. Was very disappointed to find that there are no mitral repair reference centers in the entire state of Texas. Anyone have tips on getting this type of surgery at an otherwise out-of-network center w/ excellent outcomes and figuring out insurance? Freaking out a little.

Michael Smith I have had an appointment for 6 months with Dr. Marc Gerdisch for a mitral valve repair (surgery November 5th). His office called and he unfortunately had a medical issue and will not be able to do surgery for some time. I am considering Cleveland clinic and Marc Gillinov. Anyone have thoughts about him or other surgeons there that do mitral repairs. Thanks

Corey Potter If you had to pick one of the top surgeon's in the world for your condition, Dr. Gillinov would be in the conversation. I had an AVR at Cleveland Clinic by Dr. Michael Tong but met other patients that were being operated on by Dr. Gillinov. Nothing but positive words about him. Frankly, it wouldn't matter who operated on you at that center...they are all excellent. You should definitely make an appointment with him. Best of luck in your journey.
Carmen P I agree, the Cleveland Clinic Main Campus in Cleveland, Ohio is the place to be.
Kathy Ozio I can testify to Dr. Gillanov and CC. Excellent care!

J Alexander Lassally Hi there ! Welcome. Firstly, if you are still in moderate regurgitation you have some time to work with -which is great. Secondly, you are right for feeling the stress of finding a place... It takes a long time to arrange surgery at an out of network or far flung hospital. I did this two years ago and it took a lot of time and patience. It depends on what type of insurance you have - how hard you have to work. Nothing is impossible. But you are doing the right thing looking beyond Texas... Unless you are totally into the Dallas scene of thoracotomy, I'd look beyond.... Happy to answer questions.
Michael Smith Thanks Corey, good to hear, appreciate the information.
