Susan Lynn Mikhail - you have certainly been through a lot. I'm sorry you had to endure surgery and get this subsequent diagnosis. There are minimally- invasive options to repair mitral valve leaks including something called a MitraClip that is placed through a catheter. You may be a candidate for this non surgical procedure. A leaking valve that goes unrepaired puts extra strain on your heart that leads to enlargement, possible arrhythmias, and other complications. Believe me - we were all terrified of our procedures, but medicine is able to give us back our lives. Do your research and find a surgeon you trust. You'll make the decision that's right for you.
Wishing you the best.

Louanna Miller So very sorry for the rough heart journey you have experienced. I had MVP with severe regurgitation and my atrium was enlarged. In August 2018, I had open heart surgery for MV repair at Northwestern Medicine Chicago. I asked if I could wait or not have the surgery. My cardiologist and surgeon both told me if I chose not to have surgery my heart would only have more damage and ultimately heart failure.
I researched heart valve surgeons as some only perform 5-8 a year. I went with the surgeon that performs 200 a year. Find the best heart valve surgeon in your area and have them perform your surgery. Please ask any questions and I’ll give you an honest answer. Take care.
