Is anyone taking natural dessicated thyroid for hypothyroidism? I was on it for 2 years prior to my mitral valve replacement surgery in December as prescribed by my internist. As soon as my mitral valve stenosis was diagnosed, my cardiologist told me to stop it and go on levothyroxine or Synthroid because the T3 can affect the heart. I changed over 5 months ago but I am not doing well on it and have gained 15 pounds and feel constantly cold. I want to go back to the NDT but I am afraid to - even though my internist says it’s perfectly safe. Does anyone have any experiences wih NDT to share? Thanks in advance.

Rita Savelis After OHS, the thyroid often goes out of whack (for awhile as do many other organs and hormones in the body). My body's demands (for levothyrox), which I had been on for 6 yrs since my thyroid was removed, were very high for months afterwards and I was cold all the time. I lost rather than gained weight. It did eventually steady out and I am back on my previous to OHS dose.
I think it's okay to follow your internist's advice and find the thyroid med that works for you, but it does sound like you need to change your dose of whatever you take.
