Have had ocular migraines ever since AVR surgery 2004. Started having them post op in hospital. Have mechanical valve so take Coumadin of course, with no problems. I have been reading numerous reports of similar vision problems post op. Why has this not been recognized by our cardiologists and ophthalmologists ? Needs to be addressed, not ignored or denied by them.

Mary Ann Espelage Hi, Marilyn. I had increased ocular migraines since my surgery last year. Post op I was getting them almost every day. Now I get them 3-4 times a month. That's an improvement but before AVR I would only get them 2-3 a year. I asked my cardiologist about it and he didn't seem concerned. I'm getting so used to them now. I know they will last 20 minutes or less and I feel fine after, no headaches. What's this about metoprolol? I am taking that twice a day. Does anyone know of a connection?

Clare Auten I haven't had migraines but find I can hardly wear my glasses anymore because they make things so blurry. I got them 3 months before surgery. I was wondering if it was related.
I had twice a day migraines after my procedure and had the same frustration as many others on here as I was not getting any answers from my cardiologist or surgeon's office, I literally would spend all day in my chair sick as a dog, it was putting my life completely on hold. I stopped taking Metprolol and after a few weeks have had only very minor visual disturbances once in a while but no migraines. The difference was astounding once I stopped taking it, there's no doubt the migraines and auras were related to the Metoprolol for me. Along with that I had a host of other symptoms disappear or severely lessen including:
- Vertigo
- Nausea
- Diarrhea
- Auras
- Migraines
- Light "haze" in vision
- Jittery/anxiety feeling
- Skin crawling
- Sweats, I had to shower twice a day because I was sweating so badly
- Insomnia
If you're having these symptoms it might be worth asking if you can switch to another type of BP med if you have to take something.

Ericka Carlson No, I was lucky enough that my cardiologist told me I could stop taking it, my BP and pulse are both in range.
I only found out about the side effects of Metoprolol because one morning I forgot to take it, and about 2:00 that afternoon I realized that I felt so much better. That was on a Thurs, I was going to see my cardio the following Monday so I decided to stop taking it and see how I felt by the time I went to see her, the difference was SO dramatic. I kept a close eye on my pulse and BP to make sure they stayed low and have been taking Magnesium Taurate to prevent afib.

Suzanne Hunter Had all same symptoms with vision. Dark curtain across eyes ,bright small comet like flashes plus migraines with auras no headache. Some auras prior to surgery but increased greatly after. Took metoprolol for two months post op then now onto bisoprolol which I take for life because of mechanical valve. Only have auras occasionally perhaps one a month instead of 2-3daily.
