Sue Sanchez Grela Marty, I had my Aortic Valve replaced at Mercy with Dr. Slachman on March 1, and have had a remarkable recovery. I had complete confidence in him and Mercy Hospital and they proved me right. Although our surgeries are different, I hope for the same results for you! The private rooms aided in my comfort and ability to rest well. I will be following you and keep you in my prayers.

I am a 66 yr old female currently very active (walk 6 miles 3 days a week and go to the gym 3 days a week; enjoy hiking immensely). I was diagnosed with severe mitral regurgitation last fall. I just had an ECHO this last week and have an appointment with my cardiologist next month.
I am interested in pursuing repair of my mitral valve sooner rather than later. I really don't want my heart to be damaged or to be damaged further. I'd love to use it for another 30 yrs or so... :-)
Question: during the long recovery period, how did others maintain their weight and perhaps their fitness level? This is important to me.

Cathleen Weed Hi Marty 🌟, You will be able to join an outpatient cardiac rehab program as part of your recovery. Your cardiologist can order it for you and insurance covers it. It's a fantastic program where you will be able to work out several days a week in a private gym (inside a hospital or medical building) with other cardiac patients under supervision of physical therapists and nurses who will monitor your vitals. It's a great way to get your confidence and strength back. It's usually about 12 weeks long. It really is great. You can google them in your area to get a better idea. Good luck with everything!

Kathy Blank Marty- I had mitral valve repair at age 60- the surgery was Feb 8th. I am recovering very well and if you read my journal it details my fitness milestones. I had no symptoms before surgery and received robotic surgery which sped up recovery. I started cardiac rehab at 1 month and have steadily improved in my recovery. I am able to do some jogging but had an episode of atrial Flutter which slowed my running a little. I have maintained my weight and am careful with what I eat!

Ellen Leng Agree with both of above. I had mini sternotomy for mitral repair 9/28/16. I was in good shape prior, but my left atrium was enlarged. I had rhythm issues post op, but was able to get off meds at about 20 weeks. I started rehab at 8 weeks just because they didn't have room. LOVED the rehab! I'm in better shape than before as my heart is more efficient. Being monitored while pushing limits ato rehab really gave me confidence to do more.
Keep up your program and have the surgery before you have issues. That repaired valve can last awhile!

Vanessa Corwin I have a similar story. I was quite active and fit with a heart murmur (asymptomatic) that was diagnosed as severe MVP with regurgitation after some routine tests.. I too was advised to get the repair done sooner rather than later. Had my repair done a month ago (3/22). Im walking daily, have surgeon followup on Monday; hoping to get into a cardiac rehab program. I say do it now, go thru your recovery and go on with life!

Juergen Li Marty - before you know it you will be able to walk 12 miles a day. Seriously, I was able to walk/hike 1-2 hours per day the very day I came out of the hospital - so 6 days post OHS. In the beginning my wife carried the water bottle for me. I started riding my bike after 6 weeks. I think you are on the right track - get it done and enjoy your physical fitness - which will help you tremendously to get back to your normal routine. No need to take a huge break.
