I had my mitral valve replacement done in May 2016 at John Hopkins. I had cardiac ablation in March 2018 for AFIB. That solved the issue for 18 months. I am in Atrial flutter now and my heart rate is going upto 190. Is this normal. What kind of Diet I should be taking as Atrial flutter is happening more frequently. I am a vegetarian and drink no alcohol.

Richard Buckley Madhu, I had an episode of atrial flutter about four months after mitral valve repair. I was just finishing cardiac rehab when it happened. My rate was up to about 200 and I wound up in the emergency room. An electrical physiologist put me on Tikosyn, which I've been on almost a year. I've had no further episodes. Atrial flutter is a heart electrical issue and I don't think diet will help you, but I"m not a doctor. I never had AFIB before and have never had an ablation. Maybe others in the community have experiences. You've come to the right place. All the best.

MADHU PURI Thank you all. I have been on Tikosyn and now on Dialtezam to lower my heart rate. It did help me in the ER to lower my heart rate. Now at home it has been more than a week and MY heart rate is between 110 to 130. MY EP has recommended Cardio version and Cardiac ablation. Any thoughts?

I had my Mitral valve replacement in May 2016. I had another cardiac ablation in March 2018 due to AFIB. I was put on new medication Tikosyn. I wanted to ask is it ok for me to fly for 18 hours for international travel? What are the precautions I should take. I am debating whether it is ok for me to travel. And concerned that I may not run into any heart issues when in air. I am on Warfarin for my mechanical valve.
MARIE PICUN I would check with your doctor to be on the safe side

I had my mitral valve replacement in May 2016. Soon after my surgery I went into AFIB. 18 months I was doing fine and went in AFIB in Jan 14th 2018. Had to reset my heart rate and again after 2 week went in Afib. I wanted to check is this normal. And in March 2 had to through cardiac abelation procedure which lasted 4 hours. AI just feel tired and have no energy. I am on the warfari, Tikosyn and Metoporol. I am struggling with what I should eat and I do 1 mile of walk everyday. Is there anything more cardio exercises I should do? What worries me most is going back in Afib?

Susan Lynn Madhu - I am so sorry to hear about your recurring AFIB. I don't have it, but based on your story, you may want to consider seeking an opinion from another cardiologist. There are so many approaches to stabilizing the heart after surgery, you may have more success with another treatment regimen. It never hurts to listen to what someone else may have to say. Best of luck to you!
Nancy Surprenant Takahashi HI Madhu, I'm in the early stages of my recovery from OHS (4/10/2018). I had the maze procedure also for the afib, About 2 weeks after surgery I went into afib for about 3 weeks, then out. I'm now back in afib for weeks now. My doctor says he wants to cardio convert me in a couple of weeks, so I'll then know if this is going to be the end of it. I have a feeling it won't be, I just have a sense this is how it's going to be. I would love to hear the answer to your questions, if there are any. I too am on blood thinner and metoporol.
Chris Purvis I hope you both get to a successful end very very soon!

Barbara Wood So sorry Madhu & Susan, AFib is just horrible, and very scary. I had a maze ( ablation) along with my mitral repair a year ago. I had AFib 2 weeks after surgery, had a cardioversion a few days later & was put on amiodorone for 4 months. I haven't had AFib since ( had it 4 x before surgery. ) My cardiologist said the ablation needs at least 4 months to heal. I was kept on warfarin & metoprolol for close to a year, then taken off warfarin & kept on 12.5 mg of metoprolol. The metoprolol very definitely causes fatigue & I think warfarin did for me too. I have much more energy since being taken off it. Walking a mile a day sounds good- healing is ongoing, it can take awhile...one of the lessons of ohs for me has been patience! Wishing you both the best

MADHU PURI Thank you all for such encouraging words. I did have maze procedure as well with my open heart. Also wanted to check on the diet. I was give the diet plan when discharged. Do you still follow that or it is common sense. I was told mediterrenean diet is good.
