Adam Pick Hi Juan, Sorry to hear your mom's condition. I have never heard of bacteremia before specific to heart valve infection. Bacterial endocarditis, as we recently discussed in a video with Dr. Johnston, can be an issue for patients especially at the dentist. Are your mom's doctors suggesting that this could be problematic for your mom's valves? https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/diseases/25151-bacteremia

Marie Myers Hopefully your mom is under a doctor’s care. She may be receiving antibiotics also. It is very important to follow doctors orders on this case, because the consequences of bacteremia can be catastrophic for us heart valve patients. Please keep us posted!

I'm seeking advice from this heart valve surgery community on behalf of my incredible mother. Thirty years ago, she had open heart surgery for a mechanical mitral valve implant. She's now 58, healthy, and leads a low stress life including financially, with good self care habits - clean diet and consistent light exercise. For the past two years, however, she's experienced afib and heart palpitations, where her heart seems to pause momentarily, causing lightheadedness and discomfort that’s landed her in hospital many times with nothing major found by doctors. She is a bit of a hypochondriac, but these palpitations are concerning as I’ve personally have heard them myself. Could her mechanical valve need replacing? What tests can a doctor perform to assess its condition? Also, what are the risks of such surgery at her age? What other questions should she be asking the doctor? Unfortunately, in today’s society you have to take your health into your own hands. My mom means everything to me, I want to ensure she lives her next chapter peacefully, addressing any potential health issues now while she still has her health and energy. Photo below of my momma and I.

Marie Myers It is wonderful for you to be concerned and involved in your mother’s care! First of all, does she see a cardiologist regularly? I see mine once a year, and he does an echocardiogram. This easy test will show how the heart and valve are functioning. Palpitations can be very concerning, but they are not always dangerous. It depends on what her EKG shows, and what type of irregular beats they are. The cardiologist or internist can tell you if these irregular beats should be treated or not. Sometimes a change in medications can eliminate these irregular beats. Mechanical valves can last a long time. I have a friend who has the same valve 40 years now. Th cardiologist is the best person to advise you about her mechanical valve. One other thing your mother might want to discuss with her primary care provider is the possibility of an anxiety issue. She might benefit by some therapy if she is having a hard time with worry. I know the older i get, the more i worry about things. Hope this helps!
