Is there any link to having mitral valve repair and then later developing congestive heart failure. My cardiologist states I have dependent edema and not chf since my ultra sound is normal after surgery.

W. Carter James from what I understand regardless of fixing the valves (aortic or mitral) you can still have or develop chf. They tell me even post root/vein graft and mech. aortic valve surgery that I still have chf. The valve surgery will most likely save your life but a damaged heart with chf will still be there.

Jean Raber James, none of us lives forever, but if you have no heart damage from your MVR, you have dodged early death from that cause. So yay, you!
CHF can be caused by arterial disease and high blood pressure. Aortic valve stenosis (calcification, often building up overtime as a function of "old age") can also cause CHF later in life, but not much you can do about that.
I think the trick is to keep yourself in as good a shape as possible for as long as you can. There's a picture of you on a bike. My picture is of me drinking coffee while sitting on my butt. I wonder which of us will live longer? :-)

Terry Shermeister Hi James: I'm 14 weeks post op. I'm a biker, swimmer, yoga, walker, exercise with weights and try to watch my foods. I had MVR and have noticed a slight swell in my left leg by the ankle. When I don't wear socks I don't notice any swelling. Swimming really helps. My blood pressure, and pulse rate are good. 116/82, 72 bpm. No congestive symptoms and I feel good. Hope this helps.

I am almost 3 months post op and I am noticing increased swelling to my legs. In the morning they look really normal, but by midday or later they look larger. I actually thought It was good at first but now I have a little pitting.
I am hoping this is normal as my heart adjusts to the strain of the surgery and I am up on my feet more. I know that being tired was a common symptom and that is improving.

this is my first day of cardiac rehab. I felt that I had taken it fairly easy. But when I was done and I got off the treadmill. I felt like I had to catch my breath, got a little weak and the nurse had me sit down and my bp was a little high and I felt jittery and nervous. I couldn,t talk because I felt like I was going to cry. Big Baby. Has any one had this happen? Tomarrow will be 6 weeks since my surgery.
