What a great web-site! I had successful mitral valve repair 29 years ago, but now getting older- what can you do. I am a Canadian very frustrated with our health system. My enlarged heart has a-fib now and I have been on a waiting list for an ablation for 13 months with no possible date yet given. My last MRI showed "mild to moderate" tricuspid leakage. Does any Canadian have recent experience going to the USA for diagnosis and treatment? Maybe time required, the costs, and other recommendations. I have a vacation home in WA so west coast hospitals preferred.

Richard Munson I was not surprised but sad to read your frustration up north especially when i listen to our political ruling class in this country that seem to think the canadian system is better than ours. Maybe its because they have their own cream puff health care plan, but the rest of us poor slobs can take obama care or whatever else they can dish up. They call it free but we all know nothing is for free except theirs of course. Maybe if you sneak across the border you can get a free phone and health care. Lol. 13 months for an ablation is unacceptable in any country. I wish you the best. Sorry to be such a cynic but i had my mitral valve repair at mass general in boston and from the start of the process to the actual surgery took 3 months and some of that was because i wanted winter surgery. I love this country and get very frustrated with the naysayers.

Hi James, totally agree with Richard. He is not a cynic just stating the facts. Hope that you by having a home in Washington can get healthcare on our side. And Richard I also love this country and don’t like one bit what we are all going through because of the naysayers.

Richard Munson Ana, i know you are a usa lover. It drives me nuts when the news is full of what a lousy country we live in. Kids in school today are fed a steady diet of how awful our founding fathers were. My grandson recently dropped a course because he says the professor was a practicing communist and preached it in class. Like all the other countries in the world never did anything wrong in their history. They just don’t whine about it 24/7. It should be part of the program to have to live a year in cuba before you graduate. Gee, the border is full of folks trying to get in, not sure the reverse is true. These teachers that love communism so much should transfer to Moscow university and salute putin every day. We seem to care more about the Ukrainian border than our own these days. I recall a hollywood actress cuba lover who commented how quaint it was there with all the classic cars. Never dawned on her that was all they could afford. Sorry to get on my soapbox.

Susan Lynn James - I'm sorry to hear that you have to wait so long for treatment. There are many excellent west coast hospitals and, I'm sure any of them would work with you on the cost. If you do enroll in an insurance plan in the U S, be sure to select one that will cover your desired doctor and facility. Best of luck to you!

Rose Madura Hi James. I'm sure you won't be the first person to travel here for health care. Do research online to see. I know someone from Canada who went to the UK for a new kind of hip replacement that the Canadian government would not approve for him. He paid all out of pocket and was playing golf in less than a week. Anyway, make some calls, check hospitals near your place and see what you can work out. You have to be your own advocate no matter what country you are from. Please keep us posted. Godspeed.

Richard, right on! Recently heard on the news that a governor just made a law to teach students in schools in his state about communism and what it really is so they are not lied to anymore.

Richard, when I lived in Miami and talked to Cubans that escaped from Cuba in makeshifts boats to come to our beautiful country in the 90s risking their lives and many died trying, that they would melt white plastic on pizzas to simulate they were eating a cheese pizza. That’s communism!

Richard Munson Amazing pizza story. Its easy to talk positive about communism when you are in the ruling class in washington living large at our expense. I could be wrong but i thought i read that bernie went to cuba on his honeymoon. The everything's free guy. No doubt he has a few homes that we all helped pay for. I feel for that guy that wrote in from canada a few days back. Waiting 13 months for a simple ablation on his free canadian health care. Now they want to pay off student debt, more free. How awful, my kids actually paid off their college debt by “ gasp” working and sacrificing a bit to do it. It’s called personal responsibility. Maybe a few of these schools like harvard could use their billion dollar endowments to lower the cost of education. Will my kids get a belated check in the mail? I doubt it. Uncle sam is out of money, lets face it.

This is why no one wants to work, everything is free and they don’t have to. My kid had to pay back her student loans by working also. This teaches young people not to take personal responsibility. What a mess. That Bernie fooled a lot of people and still fooling them. Yes, James having to wait that long is a crime. Hopefully he will come to the US and get the help he needs.
