I’m 28 days post op for an AVR and two steel bars installed for my sunken chest. Dr Pajaro replaced my valve and it went smoothly so Dr. J put the two steel bars for my sunken chest in right after. Hi spent one day in ICU and then four days in recovery. I felt OK for a couple of days after getting discharged but then I started getting a fever and my wife said I was acting strange. So she took me to the ER and it turns out I had some micro strokes in my brain.. And I had some kind of infection. They checked me back into the hospital and did a CT scan and then an MRI. And gave me antibiotics for the infection that I had. They showed me a picture of the MRI which was interesting because it showed a couple of small white dots near the back of my brain. Turns out that was where the strokes were. But I seem to be fine now so my brain must have re-wired itself. The anabiotic‘s took care of the infection and I was discharged for the second time after four days. Now I seem to be feeling fine and I am walking every day in the Beautiful desert in Scottsdale. We are very fortunate to have a family member to stay with down here. I have worked up to walking 3 miles now in the morning because it gets up to 100° here now. But we are thankful that everything seems to have worked out great. And I am also thankful for everyone who has posted on this site and help prepare me for what to expect!
Valerie Herndon-Vitarella Sorry to hear about your issues after discharge. Praying for a smooth recovery her on out.
Judy Shaw Poor guy. Hope your recovery is going much better.
Susan Lynn Hang in there! Sounds like you're on the path to a full recovery! Wishing you speedy progress.

So April 16th I get a new ON-X Aortic valve installed at Mayo in Scottsdale. Then most likely the next day if the heart looks good I will undergo Surgery to repair my "Pectus Excavatum" and have 2 steel bars inserted under my ribs to expand my chest. I'm actually excited and looking forward to it all. I am thankful that the Dr's know what needs to be done and that it's fixable. Plus I know I will be having it done at one of the best Hospitals in the country for these procedures. I also realize that the recovery will be a challenge. But I'm prepared for most anything after reading all the posts on this site and others that I belong to.

Gerald Poulton Hi Eric, goid attitude and the way to do it, be positive and embrace the procedure that will save your life and give you a richer fuller life, 7 1/2 months post full sternonomy aortic valve replacement, tissue valve and aortic artery aneurism repair, for me operation and recovery was not near as bad as I expected, the worst part about recovery was some uncomfortableness and my lack of patience because it takes a while but life is good and life after is great, youve got this 👍

Suzanne Finn You're positive attitude will carry you through. I'm 4 months post AVR with On-x valve and found the waiting for surgery period more difficult. You've got a bit more ahead of you, but you will be surprised how quickly you are felling better after replacement. All the best to you.
Bonnie Stone-Hope Good for you! We are very lucky to live in a time when this surgery is available.

Just got back from another visit to Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale. Met with the surgeon that is going to fix my "Pectus Excavatum" or sunken chest. After having another echocardiogram it turns out that the right ventricle of my heart is compressed enough that it's only putting out 50% of what it should. If you're interested here's a link describing the procedure: drjpectus.com She said that the heart surgeon will 1st repair my aortic valve then put me back together. Then when they are sure there are no complications she will do her procedure of inserting the bars later that day or the next day. So YAY! 2 procedures for the price of 2. My heart surgeon is out of town until March 9th and he will decide when to do the surgery. I would hope in the next few weeks. Fortunately Scottsdale is a wonderful place to visit this time of year!

Hi Eric, My son had the Nuss procedure at the age of 13 to repair his Pectus Escavatum. That was 8 yrs ago and it sounds like improvements have been made to help with pain. He was in intensive care for 3 days just for pain management. He was very happy with the outcome and the bar was removed after two years.

Eric Stromerson Hi Jennifer, glad you're son is doing good with it. I never knew it was a "condition" until a few months ago. I'm having Dr Jaroszewski at Mayo clinic do mine. And it seems like they have improved on the pain control. It's the having 2 procedures done I'm not looking forward to.

Okay, so my question is about money. I haven't seen anything in these posts about that. So if it's a forbidden topic then ignore this. But part of our stress is how much we will owe after the surgery. I have ok insurance but OHS is expensive. So that along with the rehab must add up. Plus some people have had OHS 2 or 3 times. No one has mentioned anything about the bills. I would appreciate some feedback.
Helen Daw We have maximum out of pocket of $3200, so once reached, everything is covered at 100%.

Anna Jones I had the same question! Part of my concern, is that I have read on this site about the surgeons and hospitals using medical staff that do not take our insurance, and therefore, bill the patient directly.

Barbara Wood We have an HMO so that limited where I could go & who I could use. We did check to make sure everyone was in network before surgery, I had read that the anesthesiology team particularly can be out of network - so that should definitely be checked on ahead of time. It ended up costing us $6,300, our cap was $7000. Good question!

Amy Minto Just paid the surgeons portion, which is $8,000 although l paid $2,000 after having satisfied my $4,000 deductible & having 20%resposibility. The hospital portion I just paid wound up as $5,000 (which is 20% of how much it cost . They require everything paid UP FRONT. The cost of everything if I didn't have insurance would have been three to four times that. The surgeons fee alone is a difference between $8,000 with cigna's in-network negotiated rate, and with self or private pay, it would have been $27,000. The hospital is charging $25,000. We are only paying $5,000, as that is 20%, which i what my specific plan requires us to pay. Does this help? I'm having minimally invasive mitral valve repair. If he has to replace the valve, I'm sure that cost goes up. And keep in mind that with minimally invasive repair, the ICU stay and Hospital stay are shorter. I was pretty shocked that they require payment up front, as I don't remember that being the case with my back surgeries. Adding on the expense of the hotel being $4,000, since I am travelling of town with my hubby & son, we are so far out of pocket around $11,000. Ouch. Of course your insurance is going to have a different contracted rate with the surgeon and with the hospital, but maybe this gives you a ballpark? I really had no clue until they called me with the estimate and expected payment that day or within a couple days.

Kelly Stoll I spoke with my insurance company and they suggested having the surgery team provide codes for the procedures in advance, so they can give us a quote. We have pretty good insurance but I admit that I'm concerned between being off work (pre-existing condition clause on my short-term disability plan =no pay for a few weeks) and fears about medications, etc. We are trying to stay in network, no matter where we end up, to cover as much as we can. Most hospitals here also have financial departments that can help coordinate payment plans too. I hope you find the information you are seeking.
Nancy Surprenant Takahashi I have PPO and I believe my max is 7k, i know i'll reach it, i had a hysto and gallbladder removed 2 yrs ago (same year) and I reached my max. I believe you can speak to someone in the hospital for financial assistance.

Eric Stromerson Thanks for the feedback! We are going to try to stay on top of everything such as calling our insurance to make sure things are preauthorized etc. They sure don't make it easy to understand. But at least we can pick where we go (Mayo in AZ) and who does the surgery. Since I'll have to get my Pectus problem (sunken chest) fixed along with an AVR that will add complications. I'm thankful for this site and other ones like it to get an idea of what to expect. THANKS EVERYONE!

Rita Savelis My heart goes out to you, Eric, because, yes, patients don't talk about costs, and in fact not everyone has access to or can afford surgery in the United States. It can be a battle with insurance companies, at a time when you need to concentrate on your health and recovery.
I haven't lived in the US for a long time but remember having to borrow money and to pay my share of costs immediately when I had surgery in the past.
I now live in France and paid nothing for OHS or my long hospital stay. I only had to pay for TV reception in my room if I chose to have it.
I felt very very lucky when I needed surgery and did not have to worry about finances.
Take care.

Civita Fahey I have really good insurance thankfully with no deductible ( that changed this year :-(. I only paid 175 for the hospital stay, but the charges came in and it totaled over $150,000 which the hospital and doctor only got about 35%. Thats the amount that was charged. Normally, when one pays out of pocket they have a charge equal to what they Receive from the insurance company.. You should talk to the billing department and see how you can pay, they do allow payment plans for the most part.

So I still don't have a date for my AVR. I also have a condition with my chest called "Pectus Excavatum" which means it's sunken in. It's never been a big issue in my life other than being self conscious when I take my shirt off. But it does put pressure on my heart and lungs. Fortunately at Mayo Clinic they have a specialists in repairing the pectus problem. So I go back down at the end of February for another test and to meet the Pectus surgeon. Then she will consult with my heart surgeon to see what the next step is. Not sure if they will do the procedures together or separate. So, that adds a complication to my surgery.

Well I had a profile on here but it disappeared. So I'll do it again . I'm 54 years old and an avid cyclist. I've been riding for about 10 yrs. I've done my bike races up to 8 yrs long and currently (until my heart started acting up) cyclocross racing. A little over a year ago I had a sudden decline in my performance. After seeing my cardiologist and having various tests done i found out I have a regurgitating biscuit aortic valve. And the mitral valve is also leaking. I felt pretty good other than numerous heart palpitations. So my Dr said let's wait and monitor.
About 2 months ago I started feeling pressure in my chest and shortness of breath once in awhile. So during my 6 month check and more testing my cardiologist said it's time to get it fixed.
This week we are at Mayo clinic in Phoenix to meet with a heart surgeon. I guess he didn't receive all the imaging results from my cardiologist so he didn't have all of info. But he said he would like the testing to be re done here anyway. We are here for the week and hopefully they will be able to get them all done. So far everyone here is great. And they take care of all the scheduling which is great. So hopefully by the end of the week we will know for sure wether the surgery needs to be done sooner than later.

Eric Stromerson After having most of my testing done last week and all that's left is the heart Cath tomorrow. hopefully, I will be done with tests. We go home to Bellingham, WA Wednesday. Looks like surgery will be done the last week of January or first part of February. So we will drive back down for that. I think the Dr will be replacing my Aortic valve with an ON-X valve. I'd appreciate any opinion that. I am thoroughly impressed with Mayo Clinic and my surgeon though and very happy we decided to have the surgery done here. Plus, the weather is awesome!
