Hello,
My now 38 year old husband had an On-X valve put in to replace his aortic cow valve (from a previous surgery) just over a year ago. At the time of surgery, his aorta was replaced due to an aortic aneurysm. And the surgery was successful in ensuring his endocarditis was gone. He is on warfarin and his INR is a steady 1.8.
Since the surgery, due to the On-X valve, there is obviously the clicking/ticking noise, which isn’t too noticeable. However, there are times when it seems extremely loud and he says it feels like his heart is pumping very hard. The times that concern me is when he is at rest & this occurs.
I have moderate hearing loss & wear hearing aids. There are times when I am not wearing them & I can hear his heart thumping/the clicking, ticking noise when I am 4 feet away from him. I heard him the other day in the car, engine on, radio on & without my hearing aids in - it is literally that loud at times.
For On-X patients, or anyone else with experience in this, does anyone know if this is classified as ‘normal?’ His follow-up scan & meeting with the cardiologist haven’t happened yet, so I’m wondering if anyone on here has any insight.
Thank you for your time.

Teressa Phillips There are times when my On-X is extremely loud and my heart feels like it is pumping hard, not fast, hard. Sometimes the two go together, sometimes not. For me, this is considered normal and acceptable. Some of it has to do with the stiffness of my heart along with the mechanical valve causing more stiffness. Saturday I could hear mine clicking in the car with the ac blowing, radio on, and traffic noise. However, I am not your husband and he needs to speak with his cardiologist. They might want him to wear a monitor to make sure nothing wild is going on with his heart.

Ann T I definitely sympathize. I also have the On-x valve and it sounds similar to my experience. I had been to the ED a couple of times just because of how hard it was pounding and everything has checked out ok. There was a time I was in the car with my sister, and she said, "what is that ticking?" It was me. It does take getting used to but does get more manageable with time. Keeping good communication with the doctors is always a good thing though too.

Jeff Williams I'll also comment that I had my ascending aorta replaced with the Dacron sleeve. The surgeon and Artivion people told me that would make the ticking louder. It doesn't absorb the sound that your native tissue aorta does. Hopefully, that is all that's going on for your husband.

Hello, My 37 year old husband is due for his 3rd open heart surgery to replace his aortic valve. He has a cows valve currently. He was advised to get an on-x valve this time around…does anyone have any personal experience with this valve, given his young age? ANY information would be greatly appreciated. He also has an aortic aneurysm to be fixed at the same time. Surgery date - April 12, 2023. If anyone with advice can reply before then, I’d appreciate it so much. It’s so hard to find impartial advice out there! Thank you so much.

Rose Madura Hi Emma, I'm sorry you all have to go through this again. I was 59 when I had a similar surgery and chose a tissue valve. I was on the fence between your valve and the Onyx valve. If I had gone with mechanical, it definitely would be the Onyx. But do your research; talk to your cardiologist and surgeon. Once you make an informed decision, go with it and don't look back. It will be the right decision for you. Godspeed

Marie Myers The younger the patient, the more they recommend a mechanical valve. This is usually the recommendation, since the younger the patient, the shorter the life span of the tissue valve.. I would definitely choose the Ony-X valve if I was as young as your husband. The Ony-X does not require as high a level of anticoagulation as other mechanical valves. Godspeed on your husband’s heart journey!

Kind of looks like a pool hose. I asked how long this would last and my nurse said, "longer than you will". LOL Yes, I take warfarin daily....along with a statin and supplements. I take my INR at home and I nail it almost every time, I test twice a month.
If I had to do it over again, I would not change a single thing as far as my choice of valves. Tissue valves just don't last. I eat healthy, exercise every week, heavy weights, cardio and light weights high reps. So far I am plugging along just fine and I dont have to worry about another open heart surgery again.
