I have a question for mitral valve surgery patients. I am asking for my husband who had open heart valve repair and MAZE procedure Sept 12 at Mayo Rochester. He continues to have AFIB about once/week lasting a couple of hours. He was very fit before surgery and has just started cardiac rehab. Our question: How long should we wait for him to get a covid vaccine. We are going on a cruise Jan 6, so we know there could be covid exposure. Thank you for your feedback…Ellen

Richard Munson Sounds exactly what i had for surgery and i had a couple of a fib incidents right after in hospital after but the whole idea of maze is to get rid of it. I got a covid shot 2 months after surgery assuming they actually work. I have my doubts at this stage.

Susan Lynn Ellen - That's probably a question for your husband's primary care doc. I don't think the vaccine would be an issue at this point, but since this year's is a new formulation, his doc may have more insight on the precautions than the rest of us. Enjoy your trip!

Klara Čičić Dear Ellen, Afibs are frequent postsurgery complication in the first 12 weeks or so despite having MAZE. I hope they will start to subside. Regarding vaccine, he should be clear but check with his doctor.
