Hello, i am 56 and I am 11 weeks out from AVR with a mechanical valve. I had been feeling pretty good but recently I have had pain with deep breaths, like pleural pain that goes from the bottom of the rib cage to my jawline on the right. When I sit or stand straight, it feels better. I had a CT and chest X-RAY and they have ruled out an Embolism. Have you heard of this or know anyone that has experienced this? Could this be a normal process of healing? I would like to hear some experiences 10, 12 or more weeks post op. All I know is it's painful. Thanks!

Tammi Gunwall Have they checked for Pericarditis or a Pericardial effusion? Symptoms generally are severe pain that can radiate, Pain or trouble catching a breathe, and/or fever. Symptoms are relieved usually by sitting up or leaning forward. This can be fairly common after heart surgery but left unmanaged, it could become life threatening and painfully unbearable. I dealt with this just 2 wks out of surgery and have struggled with it on and off for a while. I am 9 mos post-op now.
Tammi Gunwall Best way for them to rule Pericarditis out is via an Echocardiogram.

Tammi Gunwall Yes, it can happen. My last painful episode was at 4 mos out. Our heart sister Julie McDonald-Lundgren (who lives close to me), just had her first flare up of Pericarditis at 12/13 wks post-op. Anyways, I'm not saying it's a for sure thing in your case (I'm not a Dr), just sounded like similar symptoms. It might be something you would just want to ask your Cardiologist about. I pray you find relief soon!! ♡

Elizabeth Hartman So I had a CT and CXR. They were both normal! I guess it's just normal healing. Thanks for the advice. I will take any and all advice I can get on this process. Still hoping there is more improvement to come! I have no idea when I can start to lift some weight or exercise more. I ride my bike and walk but I'd like to do more.

shannon parratto Hi there, it sounds like Pericarditis to me. I have had several bouts of it since my surgery in 18 dos ago. My doctor can determine if it's Pericarditis when the pain you ( and I ) describe lessens when you bend over and take a deep breath. I am usually on an anti-inflammatory for several days before symptoms improve. It gets better... :)
