Good morning I am finally home from the hospital basically I was in the hospital for 31 days and still on bed rest at home for another month I wish I could write on here and say wow my valve replacement went Flawless but it did not. I guess in essence I could say the valve replacement was okay however the surgeon nicked my artery as he was pulling out the catheter after replacing my aorta valve and four emergency surgeries later within 2 weeks 31 days in the hospital six blood transfusions two emergency nights that I never want to relive again but praise God I'm here but I got to tell you this was no walk in the park.

I do understand your feelings. In Feb 2020 12 days after I had a heart attack, I was having fluid drawn from around my heart (pericardial effusion) and they knicked my liver; I went into hemmoraghic shock and was in coma like state for 4 days. I was airlifted to a large university hospital where I finally recovered enough to get my TAVR in June 2020 (at UVA, the university hospital I mentioned). So I know feelings seem like a roller coaster ride right now, but things will be made right. Just hang in there, and this will soon be behind you.😊🙏

DeLois Tweedy Eleanor, I had a TAVR in June, 2020 to replace my aortic valve. The hospital where I was uses conscious sedation as much as they can, so I was basically awake during my procedure. So, I was only groggy afterward. I did not experience being nauseated or other issues surrounding waking up from general anesthesia.
Usually patients go home the next day, but I was kept 2 days because of other issues. I had no problems or issues stemming from the TAVR. I was extremely symptomatic prior to, and the valve replacement was life saving for me.
If can answer any more questions, let me know. I'll do my best.

Eleanor Erdogan I am so happy to read this thank you. I spoke to my doctor in regards to the sedation and they use propopol basically it's sedation it's not general anesthesia where I have to be intubated. I'm very grateful for that and it is the best sleep you ever get LOL . I'm grateful to read you didn't have any kind of huge reaction when waking up for some reason (this seems to be a thing I don't know why) Monday is the date though it almost wasn't a date as of yesterday but that's a story that the doctor did not sign the right form therefore 4:00 yesterday afternoon I drive home to find my endodontist check the wrong box and said I was NOT cleared for surgery well needless to say after hysterically crying for an hour I was able to get in touch with the doctor and he was able to sign a new form so we're back on track for Monday morning at 7:00 a.m. thank you so much D elois I appreciate you thank you

I haven't really had any symptoms up until recently walking seems to be a little bit of a problem stairs are a huge problem but before that I didn't even know I had a heart condition. Patsy Stewart I had an unsuccessful OHS in November 2020. I had a TAVR approximately one month later. The TAVR was a breeze compared to the OHS. I was given something to relax me, but I was awake/aware during the whole procedure. I was taken to the recovery room to be watched for awhile and then taken back to my room. I didn't experience much pain at all, and I was allowed to get up (with help) to go to the bathroom. I spent one night in the hospital and got to go home the following evening. I did have to have a thoracentesis the next morning because of fluid buildup which was already present before the TAVR. That was the most painful experience of all. I would highly recommend a TAVR and was very thankful that I was blessed with this life~saving procedure.

DeLois Tweedy I had a TAVR in June, 2020, using bioprosthetic bovine valve. I was 65 at the time and tissue valve was thought to be the best choice. It was uneventful and went well. I had conscious sedation, so was aware during the procedure. I was discharged from the hospital after staying 2 nights. I was a little sore initially at the site of the catheter insertion (groin area), but otherwise not in pain.
Sorry you've had setbacks, but appears that the wait has started again. May 1 will be here soon! Keeping you in my prayers and hoping for the best. Keep us posted.

Debra Russo Eleanor, I've had a couple of these done with no anesthesia and I was fine. The doctor would have given me something if I'd really needed it, but my heart was in such bad shape he didn't want to give me anything unless it was necessary. I had no trouble with the procedure, and I didn't need anything. My first was through the wrist, the last was through the groin. Neither was awful. You will do GREAT! I'll keep you in my prayers.

Hi guys I had good news today was my appointment with my cardiologist for my up and coming cardiac catheterization. The good news is we decided that we're going to go through the wrist and I don't have to lay down for 4 hours that's generally only done he said when they go through the groin. I'm so happy because all the things I was worried about he took care of today so wish me luck for Monday at 7:30 in the morning all prayers welcomed

Kevin Stevenson I had mine through the wrist as well. You do have to lay down for a while and they simply use varying degrees of pressure on the insertion site. Really was not a big deal for me. I understand the groin is a more involved and longer period of inactivity. I will say this about the heart cath, because I don't like folks to have surprises. When they say it feels like a bee sting when they insert, that is 100% accurate. It lasts a little longer than a bee sting, but very similar, then it is gone. All in all, not a very bad procedure.

George Gardopee Eleanor - it sounds like we have had a pretty wide range of experiences with catheterization. For what it is worth, I wrote a detailed account of my experience in my journal. In the posting labeled “My Experience at the Cleveland Clinic” look for a section labeled “Testing Day 2”. I found the catheterization to be not in the least distressing or uncomfortable. The tranquilizing drugs they give you are lovely.

Brady Busch I didn't like the heart cath. They went through the wrist and the cable could be felt near the shoulder area, probably where a bend is.All the while,my heartbeat was being played on speakers in the room.Kind of eerie. Then my heart rate slowed and the doctor came over and asked me some questions, like if I was dehydrated. He also said it may be the procedure itself. Afterwards,it was about an hour or two recovery.I guess they do it,to make sure the wound area is clotting.I remember the nurse walking by sometimes and telling me not to use that hand, when I had my phone.

Patsy Stewart Mine have always been done through the wrist as well. They’ve always put a pressure type thing on the injection site and after that is removed, they put a plastic type thing around the wrist and forearm where you can’t bend your wrist for 24 hours. If you’ll look through my photos, you can see what I’m talking about. It’s a photo of my son holding my hand that’s propped up on my heart pillow after OHS. The procedure is quite interesting because you can hear them talking and discussing what they see. I forgot and wore my glasses in for the last one. After it was over, my cardiologist stayed in the room and showed me what he had found and I could see it on the big screen. It was quite fascinating to see what was going on and to have it explained right there on the spot.

Rose Madura Mine, 5 years ago was through the groin area. I don't remember how long I was laying down but was sitting up afterwards although not all the way sitting up, but at the same time not lying down. They used some sort of plug and I don't remember what it was called. My brother said it sounded like a plumber's plug. Whatever it was, allowed me to go home after a couple hours rather than pressure applied flat on your back for several hours. Anyway, I do believe that most people nowadays are getting catheterizations through the wrist.

Susan Eckermann Hi Eleanor, Absolutely not. You should get as many opinions as you need. Finding a surgeon and surgical plan you feel comfortable with is so important, and will bring you some measure of peace as you await your surgery. Had I “settled” for my first surgeon - through my HMO- I most likely would have ended up with a valve replacement. This surgeon gave me 60% chance of a successful repair. I sought additional opinions and found a surgeon that answered all my questions thoroughly, and took the time to explain what made a potential repair so difficult. At my consult with him, I felt confidence and optimism. I knew he was the right choice for me. I wish you all the best in your journey. You are your own best advocate.

I decided to kind of redo my first post it was very short and to the point. I have been going to a Cardiologist for a while now due to having a lot of palpitations which I always thought and the doctor thought as well that they were always due to my anxiety and menopause. However , 6 months ago I found out that I have hardening of my aortic valve . In last 3 months it must have went from mild to severe by the way that totally kills me how we can have stenosis of the aorta valve and it be between mild and severe anyway I was floored by that because I have absolutely zero symptoms. Correction, I do have a little chest pain when aggravated so I'm not exactly symptomless. I don't know which operation or procedure I'm going to have whether it be the tavern method the old fashioned break the ribs method or the chest wall method I'm not sure which of the three I'm going to be well suited for I guess that's why we're doing a cardiac catheterization and a CAT scan. I hope they allow me to sit up or at least have my head in an upright position after the cardiac catherization due to extremely bad vertigo the last time I had an MRI it kicked me into a 3 week about with my vertigo and I don't want this again because I can't afford to have dizziness because I won't know whether it's from my heart or it's from the vertigo I know I've said a lot I apologize I'm really looking forward to hearing from all of you thank you for listening.

Susan Lynn Eleanor - I think everyone with a valve problem gets a cardiac catheterization. If there are blockages, the surgeon will take care of them while he's 'in the neighborhood.' The CAT scan is common if your surgeon is considering a minimally-invasive side entry or maybe TAVR. You're definitely going to want to ask questions. If you're a good candidate for TAVR, that could be a much easier procedure and recovery.
Also, as Rose mentioned above, my sister also had terrible vertigo and was helped by the same procedure. She had to have it done a few times, but it resolved her dizziness.
Wishing you the best of luck! Please keep us posted on your progress.

George Gardopee Hi Eleanor. I can identify with your shock and fear. (Angela - wisdom teeth extraction was also my only surgery. 50 years later I was told I needed OHS.). I knew almost nothing about OHS until my wife found this site and I started to watch the videos and read the many success stories from the people here. The terrific people on this site helped me reduce my fear levels significantly. In my case the information I got here helped me realize that a repair was a better option when my local doctors were recommending a replacement. Ask anything - someone here who has gone through the same emotions and stress as you are will give you insight into what is ahead for you. I think nearly everyone will tell you the anticipation is worse than the surgery. Good luck!

Susan Eckermann Hi Eleanor. Greg said it very well. I had my surgery - OH, complicated mitral valve repair, Maze, and clipping the atrial appendage, just one month ago. Prior to surgery, I had few symptoms. Mainly fatigue which I attributed to just being "run down." Thankfully, my doctor heard the distinct murmur and referred me to a cardiologist. The waiting is difficult, but choosing a surgeon you are comfortable with and have confidence in, is so important. All the warriors here will help to answer your questions honestly and help you know what to expect. With this knowledge, comes some measure of peace. I recently read the case notes from my surgery. It brought me to tears, although I keep returning to read it again. My surgeon and his staff worked so hard to repair my valve. After 5 days in the hospital, I was home and starting my recovery. The relief I feel is immeasurable, I expected great pain, but have really experienced only discomfort, which is more of an annoyance, and relieved with Tylenol. Every day I am a bit stronger, and am slowing resuming normal activities. Be patient with yourself, and chose a surgeon you have confidence in. You will not only survive, you will thrive.
