Created this account for my husband Clint Lane. Surgery on 12/4 was successful to replace ascending aorta, aortic valve & double bypass. He is doing well. Any suggestions & tips on what we can expect pat home during recovery would be most helpful. Physically, emotionally & psychologically. I am purchasing him a recliner today. What other things should I prepare in advance?
Thank you!
Sue Lane

Marie Myers I would say store up your patience and understanding. His body and mind have been through a lot, and it takes time to recover both mentally and physically. It can be a bit of a roller coaster ride with emotions for a couple weeks. Just know that progress will be slow, but steady. Every day will be different, but every week things will get a little better. Encourage walking and deep breathing!

Brian Tinsley HI... I would prepare for possible depression which is common after this type of surgery. I had my aortic dissection type A repaired 16.5 years ago and had emergency ER surgery. FF to 12/19 and I will have my aortic root, aortic valve, old dacron replaced and possible rerouting of coronary arteries or something like that. The procedure is called a BioBentall. I am getting the Edwards Mangna Ease valve the one that has a 20 years life span they claim and proven 1 billion open and shuts. I remember being very emotional the first time at 40 years of age and stayed downstairs for a few days as I could not make it upstairs. I have been on Lexapro for 16.5 at 20mgs. It does help a bunch. !

Rose Madura Take one day at a time and expect lots of naps. He should do as much as possible on his own but no lifting. It may help to put things lower that normally have to be reached for because stretching is painful on the incision. You'll see improvement daily but don't rush it.

Lorraine Mobley I have been riding the up/down rollercoaster since my surgery on 10/29. Some days I feel full of energy and almost back to normal and other days just want to sleep or stay in pjs all day. I have had to allow myself to accept this as part of healing. I find I do better when I drink enough water, try to be outside and sit in the sun a little and take multivitamins (I take the prenatal ones because they have more folic acid and B vitamins to help with energy) Men can take them also (I am a pharmacist) but please ask his MD first. Happy healing and be patient!

Susan Lynn All good advice. I agree with Lorraine - energy levels can be up and down. I would recommend short, warm (rather than hot) showers as bp can drop. I'd also highly recommend cardiac rehab - it makes a huge difference for heart warriors and their caregivers! All the best!

Clinton Lane 12/31/2019 update. Thank you all for the great advice. Clint's cardiologist cleared him to drive again as of yesterday. He is sleeping flat or on his right side in bed again. His energy level is improving every day. Cardiologist advised him to put the surgery out of his mind & start living & enjoying life again & to start cardio rehab now so he can regain his strength & confidence with movement.
Clinton Lane All in all he has recovered amazingly well.
