Just a message of good will for an uneventful and quick recovery for Doug, Janet, Judy, Roger, Cathy and all those upcoming this month. I graduated last week from rehab so now I'll be returning to work next month and even thinking about returning to school. Heck I don't want to waste my second chance at life. I feel great and I know all those who recently undergone the surgery and those upcoming will feel the same. Give it time and don't get discouraged if you hit a bump. You jumped one big bump when you get/got past the surgery. Go for it! Take care my heart friends.

Hello all, I just completed my first work of cardio rehab and it was great. Some discomfort, cramping, stabbing pain right side when I move around or do some chest work. I'm being told this is related to muscle repair not my heart. My BP & P was good and really was not very tired after. I kind felt inspired. I hoping this good feeling continues. Just an update and hope it helps others going through this now and soon. Blessings to you all and now off to walk my dogs. (Yea, I can walk my dogs now- 7wks post AVR). Take care.

W. Carter The best thing about rehab is the affirmation that our physical fitness is improving and that our valves are working properly under pressure. I remember at about 3 months I went jogging by myself to just test the new valve to make sure it would handle the stress. Thats just me I do crazy things not really thinking or caring about what happens. With rehab you have professionals to help you if something goes wrong.

Yea, just got back from post hospital appointment and they said I looked great--7 days. Normal oxygen level, ticker sounded good, lungs sounded clear and my incisions appeared to be healing norm. Also, my blood pressure was the lowest it has been for months and my husband feels I move slower, but noticed I did not have to stop when we went up a mini hill. Sorry, but I just had to gloat for a second. I know this is only the beginning and they had to redo my Coumadon but I'll take this as a motivator for another day.
Hope all is going well (stepping) with you all and special shout outs to Ihn, Doran, Serena, Patricia and Liz the next few days. Blessings.

Hey......Im home. Yes not fun just to let you guys thank you for your wishes now any upcominhg surgery. My advice is beware of the upst tummy post surgery. If had or have any GERD let them know. The sleep meds do funny things. Also, ladies a non-binding sports bra more size larger is good & you don't need to huge for this either. In few more days I will post again, my hubby wanted to add somethings for the caregivers too. Now its my 5 mins walks, spirometer, eating better, ttrying to sleep more than 2 hours. Oh well off I go! I think I hear my spirometer calling to me!

Well, I'm only 72 hours away and now everything is starting to go in slow motion. My dogs and husband want to see up and running around again soon and even my hairdresser insisted I make an appointment for Thanksgiving.

Hi you all. I have a question regarding diet after aortic replacement. I've been told I will be taking a blood thinner and got some lite direction on foods and I'm 8 days away. Can you guys suggest some food dishes that are easy to make and blood thinner friendly. My husband will be cooking/caregiving for me and he is not a cook. I was thinking omelets, some pasta with marinara, chicken with carrots and potatoes, tomato soup, vegetable soup (Homemade). I've been told no greens, most nuts, (cranberries or blueberries??), avocado, and even olive oil. I guess I will use vegetable oil if necessary. Also, no yogurt too??
Any of your suggestions will be helpful. I know you don't feel like eating, but I thought I would ask the experts, you guys who have been through the battle or fight now. My husband thanks you too in advance.
Best wishes you all and look forward and please "Keep On Ticking."

Hello All, I got my surgical date today, Oct 13th! It's strange, I'm scared, excited and relived at the same time. I'm scared of the pain, but find a sense of relief from the possibility of returning to a healthy me one day. My surgeon recommended the organic valve vs the mechanical. He feels by the time I need a replacement they will have made the procedure less traumatic so its is worth the risk, plus I'm Type 1 diabetic.
I felt better talking to him afterwards and so did hubby. Wish us luck so now back to trying to wrap up all those day to day details before I go on my little "vacation". Take care.

I requested a massage in the hospital and it helped, a lot! I got home last night from the hospital and today I've slept and also spent an hour just sitting on my dad's back patio. It's the simple things that get you excited! Oh and the shower you get to take when you get home from the hospital will destroy you physically, but you will feel so much better to be clean ! First thank you all for your comments and suggestions. They were helpful, inspiring and appreciated. Good news, I was able to change my policy over to another Kaiser plan with no yearly deductible. I promised the rep at Covered California and my broker friend to tell you guys about it. Generally, you cannot do this, but they were able to make an exception for me. Thank you Lisa at Covered California and a great patient advocate (Mary) at Consumer Health Alliance. I will be seeing my surgeon on 09/14 so I'm a little scared, but the possibility of returning to an active person is helping me a little with the fear.
I will post more later, but just wanted to let you guys know and please tell others who may be having the same problem especially if they live in California. God bless each and everyone of you and Adam of course too. BTW Adam my husband is reading your book now and signed on in the community too. Take care especially Janea, Denise, Rosemary, Jackie and Victoria in your flight to recovery.

I've beeen told I need an aortic valve replacement. I have insurance through Kaiser Permante and wonder if anyone or knew of anyone who have this surgery through them. I will see the doctor again in two weeks and wondering I should wait and try to get new insurance next enrollment. I have heard very little about Kaiser and Heart surgery, but overall my experience is 6.5/10 okay but not 10/10. I like my cardiologist but he will not be doing the surgery plus I have to travel to LA and I live in Oceanside so I'm kind of freaking out. I'm female, 55 years old and I am experiencing symptoms with severe stenosis of the aorta. Any experience would be helpful. Thank you fellow Heart Patients and good luck all those with upcoming surgery and Sherry today.

Rosemary Resler I would first ask the doc if it can wait till January. I don't know anything about that insurance, we have Aetna, which so far basically sucks because we have such huge deductibles and co-pays. And the medical and drug deductibles are separate from one another too. I just started this process two weeks ago and the bills are rolling in. I also have aortic replacement coming up on 9/8/15, can't wait to see that bill.

Naomi Ivker We have United Health care which stinks. The (sort of) good news is that under the affordable care act the most you can pay out of pocket (co pay deductible uncovered amounts) should be $3500. Ginger Marine Mine could not wait. I was already maxed out on my share of UHC so I am hoping there won't be much more to deal with. Have not seen a bill yet, but I know UHC told me the drs fee is usually ~$80,000. I had six days n the hospital due to complications and basically 2 openings, plus I went to a rehab center for 10 days. Have no idea what the total will be, but I could not have lived, likely, without it done. Thank God for ACA.

Jean Raber I wish I had an answer about Kaiser, and God knows I hate to tell someone who feels crappy already to call an insurance company and play phone-go-round with them, but that might be your best bet.
Am in a similar situation. Waiting to find out what the cardio and hematologist recommend next month, and then will call Blue Care Network to see if they'll pony up and for how much. There's one guy named Karl who actually gives correct answers and good service. I always tell them I need to talk to him.
Ginger, I agree. Many things about ACA could be improved, but I went without health insurance for several years. I wouldn't even be able to afford the diagnostics (TEE was over $2,000) without insurance I got through ACA.

Christine Oliva Thank you all for replying. I really need some encouragement right now. I did try to talk to Kaiser, but terrible service, numerous calls, run around, no help and yesterday after 3 wks I was informed my policy had a $75k annual limit so too bad for me. Also, they would not give me an approximate cost on anything but I should understand I was responsible for anything over $75K. They also told me "if you recover from your operation, we could sell you policy for next year." Great, thanks for your concern KP. Which is one of the reasons I am thinking of waiting do I want these people to operate on me? Of course, I may have no choice. I am trying to talk to an advocate this week so wish me luck. I don't want it for free, I just want to see if I can set up a payment or installment plan so I don't lose my house.
Thank you Daniel for mentioning the women from Ventura who I will search the profiles. I will let you guys know what happens with me and the insurance company. This way all these calls and frustration can help others or at least warn them of this huge loop hole. I feel like Alice, but I won't give up even with a bad heart valve. No way!
Thank you again and you all please take care of yourself, loved ones and those taking the plunge soon. Crossed fingers and toes! See you soon.

W. Carter The educational process to become a cardiac surgeon is one of the longest in the medical field. Cardiac surgeons must complete four years of college, four years of medical school, a 5-year general surgery residency and a 2-3 year specialized cardio or cardiothoracic fellowship. So with that being said they (heart surgeons) are all over-qualified to operate on you. As far as the cost above what your insurance will pay, they can't eat you, as long as you make payments (no matter how small) it will not effect your credit. Quit worrying and take care of yourself. Good luck and God bless!
