Has anyone ever had a Trans Esophageal Echocardiogram? I have to call my cardiologist’s office tomorrow to get this scheduled in January 2026. I have mitral valve regurgitation. Cardiologist told me today that on a scale of between 1 and 4, my mitral valve is about 3.5 according to his review of my echocardiogram that I had last Friday. I’m just wondering what the doctors will see in this procedure. Thanks!

J Alexander Lassally The TEE is the gold standard to quantify the type and extent of your leak. It will inform the timing of surgery - or whether you can wait. Sometimes, the TEE shows the pathology in more clarity than the standard echo.... Not fun but a necessary next step!!

Valerie Allen Most of us have likely had a TEE. As I understand it, it gives the cardiologist the opportunity to see the valves themselves, not just on a picture. For example, my BAV was firmly identified when it wasn’t quite clear on the pictures.

Thomas Brusstar I think I'm unusual because I did NOT need a TEE. My trans-thoracic echo (normal, from outside of chest) was very clear, so my surgeon said he could see everything perfectly for my textbook MVP. As I understand it, the TEE is just uncomfortable because they go down the esophagus to get really close to the valve. I think they sedate you to make it less annoying. But if they want a better image, they should have it! It lets them plan the surgery.

Kathy Ozio It was the TEE that showed I needed my valve repaired ASAP. It wasn't bad, I don't even remember- fell asleep and woke up. Nothing from the procedure, just the shock when they told me I needed to get it taken care of soon.

Robert Miller I had one. They will stick a sensor down you throat. This will allow them to get the sensor close to your heart to give them the most accurate result regarding regurgitation, ejection factor, etc. They can do this while you are still somewhat awake. I told them to just knock me out. I think I was the last patient and had like half a dozen students working on me having fun getting me under... Turned out I needed surgery very soon. Having said that, this just gives the surgeon an idea what (s)he will face. It's only once they open you up when they make the real decisions.
