Deborah Hudson Based on what your needs are. I had TAVR for same thing last Thursday at Emory University Midtown with Dr. Nivod Thourani. It is amazing. I am in a study for people who are at low risk for open heart surgery. The luck of the draw gave me the TAVR. It is amazing how fast your are in and out and on your way to recovery.
I want to hear from others who have had this done too. Currently only high risk and intermediate risk people for open heart can get TAVR unless they are in a study and are assigned this treatment.

Charles, you can ask about TAVR but most likely you will have the full surgery or possibly minimally invasive (through the side). You'll be surprised how well you do and once you're healed you'll feel so much better. Cardiac rehab is always a great idea after surgery. It's basically monitored exercise in a physical therapy setting and is covered by insurance. Basically your biggest choice will be whether to get a tissue valve or mechanical.

Tessa Choi TAVR I thought wasn't an option for Sever Aortic Valve Stenosis. Have you talked to a surgeon? I had the same diagnosis the difference being my aortic valve was a bicuspid valve with sever stenosis. I had to have open heart surgery to have the valve replaced. However, they were able to do a partIcal open. This way they aren't opening you up all the way. I went with the Bovine biological valve. I didn't want a mechanical valve because I didn't want to be on Coumadin the rest of my life.

Cathleen Weed Hi Tessa yes TAVR is for severe aortic valve stenosis. It's not approved yet for low risk surgery candidates, only high risk (meaning OHS would be too dangerous for various reasons). However, it is currently in the study phase for all patients. Also, it can only be done on native or tissue valves (not mechanical) so you will probably be a candidate for it by the next time you need a valve, if necessary. It's going to be common in the future.

Deborah Hudson Medicare will pay for TAVR if it is indicated for any level of risk for Aortic Valves. I am 63 so I had to be in the study to even have a chance at TAVR. As God would have it I got TAVR for critical aortic valve stenosis.
