I am 84, female, and need a new valve. I
have had all the tests and am scheduled for
surgery on May 24th. I am in pretty good
health, only symptoms now are shortness
of breath with exertion. My stenosis has
been mild until just a month ago and is now considered severe. I would like to hear from others who have had the surgery who are willing to share their experience. I live in Overland Park, Ks
and am having the surgery at the University of Kansas Med Center.

Peggy Whitecotton Hi Beverly, I had aortic valve replaced with a Bovine (cow) tissue valve on 8/18/2015. I was 74 and doing great. I had aortic stenosis for many years then, like you, went from mild to severe. I had my surgery at DePaul medical center in St Louis, MO. You read my journals covering my surgery and recovery. Marie Myers You might qualify for a TAVR. My friend had one done in 2016, and she will celebrate her 99th birthday in September. I had an open AVR (bovine) and ascending aneurysm resection a year ago at age 63. Hopefully some of the other "veteran" heart valve patients will tell you their stories. Like Peggy said, you will get a lot of good info and reassurance here.

Just had my MVR in December. Prior to surgery, I was introduced to a lady from my church who advised she had her valve replaced 1 year before. She was in her late 80s and had no issues at all.

Rose Madura Yes, check with your cardiologist about TAVR. My v aunt had one at 74 and said it was a piece of cake compared to OHS. Also remember that both Barbara Bush and Barbara Walters both had OHS in their 80s and did fine. Please keep us posted.
