I'm considering renting a recliner, and noticed that many of them are geared toward elderly patients. What features or models are best suited for heart surgery recovery? Any recommendations?

Susan Lynn Audrey - Most people opt for electric ones since you can't put pressure on your arms after surgery. I had a regular recliner, but I wasn't comfortable sleeping in it. Many heart warriors swear by them! Good luck!

Robert Miller The first couple of weeks I slept in the recliner couch. The most important think is how much it can recline. The more the better. You also have to consider where/how to control it. If the recliner goes almost flat but the controls are fixed on the side, you probably can't reach them in the extreme position which makes them kind of useless. Instead of renting, you might also consider just buying one. We use our reclining couch on an almost daily basis just to watch short show after dinner (before going back to work...)

Anna Rakowicz Hi Audrey, I bought a power (with remote) one from Lazy Boy. I love it, it even lifts you all the way up to standing if necessary- though I don’t have a need for that yet. I got it for possible knee replacement surgery too.

Pam Gabriel when I had my shoulder surgery, I tried sleeping in a recliner and it was very uncomfortable(it was electric with the controls on a cord). Then a friend gave me a wedge pillow for my bed and that was way more comfortable for me. I am planning on doing the same thing when I have my heart surgery next month.

Larry Peterson Hi Audrey - I bought a recliner that had separately adjustable headrest, recline, and foot support. It has a remote on a cord that slips easily into a pocket on the side of the chair and is easily retrievable from a reclining position. It has a "Zero Gravity" setting. The brand was "Catnapper". This really saved me after surgery, as I couldn't tolerate a bed for the first couple of months. I still use it 10 months post-op when the bed doesn't agree with me. It's hard to imagine prior to surgery how difficult not being able to use your arms is. All the best Audrey!
