I am posting for my wife who had Open Heart Surgery and cannot physically post. She has been in 2 hospitals and a skilled nursing facility for a total of 70 days. She was discharged on September 15th, cannot walk assuming to atrophy, and her mental state has been significantly reduced. Is this all `normal` and will it eventually go away? Thanks in advance.

Marie Myers That does not sound like a typical post op course. Did she have any serious medical issues like this before surgery? I hope you get some answers on her continuing problems.

Armund Dezii Thanks Marie, she did have other medical issues prior to surgery that must have been amplified post surgery. Just interested in the `typical' recuperation period.

Rita Savelis So sorry to hear that Armund. I was in the hospital a long time - 7 weeks, but I was able to walk, because I took short walks (with help) in hospital. Anasthesia can cause mental states to change temporarily. Everyone has their own "normal". Hopefully she will begin to walk now and the atrophy will end. That can take time. You'll have to ask her doctors for advice and more information. I'm sorry that you have to go through this. Being a partner of a patient can be very hard.
