About Me (In My Own Words)
As I try to think back to tell you my valve story, I am not sure where to begin. I was told at 18 I had a heart murmur but that they felt it was a functional murmur and not to worry about it. When I went into the military I reported a functional murmur and passed the physical. One and a half years later I developed high blood pressure and was treated for a short time. I completed my BSS at the University of Utah and shortly there after was diagnosed will a mild mitral valve regurgitation after a stress test. I was told this is common in females and nothing to worry about. I am now retired with 3 grandchildren that keep me happily on the go. About six years ago a doctor noticed the murmur again and was not too worried as it was hard to hear but had a sound that he wanted to check out. After tests were done I was told I had mild to moderate aortic regurgitation. I was followed once a year and had an echocardiogram every three years. Two years ago I began to get fatigued and out of breath easily. I began to swell in my ankles. Last month I was found to have aortic regurgitation/ mitral stenosis. Next test revealed mitral valve structure problems and mild tricuspid regurgitation. I was scheduled to have replacement of both valves in two weeks.
