About Me (In My Own Words)
3-1/2 years ago I was diagnosed with a bicuspid aortic valve and an associated aneurisym. The aneurisym was small enough at that time and it has been monitored closely. The aneurisym is now at 5 cm. Time for surgery to have it fixed. I am 55 years old. I also have mitral valve prolapse, which I have known about most of my life and it has never given me any trouble. I am having my aortic valve replaced with a mechanical one, given my age and I have the option to have the mitral valve repaired or replaced. I am still on the fence on this one. Mitral valve prolapse runs in my family, both my mom and aunt have it and have not had any surgery for it. My aunt lived to be 94 and my mom is 80. If the mitral valve is repaired there is a 6% failure rate withing 10 years. If it is replaced I will be on more blood thinners than if I just have the aortic valve replaced. I welcome everyone's input. Reading about you all has been so helpful to me.
