About Me (In My Own Words)
It has been almost 12 years since I underwent open heart surgery for congenital aortic stenosis requiring a valve replacement, along with ASD closure. I was 10 weeks pregnant when I had surgery and wouldn't have survived the pregnancy without the valve replacement. I am incredibly grateful to the team at Mayo Clinic for a smooth surgery and recovery and for taking care of my unborn daughter.....who is 11 now!
Because I choose a bovine valve, instead of a mechanical valve, I am now facing valve deterioration. I understand the appeal of a mechanical valve and not having to worry about a future heart procedure but I am only 43 years old and really do NOT want to be on coumadin for the rest of my life. I am very active.....hike, camp, kayak....and am concerned about the impact being on this strong blood thinner will impact my lifestyle and quality of life.
I am strongly considering a TAVR which wasn't available when I had my original procedure. Buuuuuut it is still a short term solution and will only last around 12 years or so.
I am curious to learn more about other patients' experiences and what life looks like for them after surgery for a mechanical valve and TAVR.
