About Me (In My Own Words)
I was asymptomatic but GP found murmur. After lots of tests, determined severe regurgitation of the mitral valve. For a variety of reasons, surgeon needed to do open heart.
I was planning on 7-10 days in hospital driving in a month and 3 month return to golf/fitness. As they say,”man plans and God laughs”. In recovery I had a stroke on left side and 4 seizures. I was in ICU 12 days, an AV block. In South Carolina, you can’t drive until 6 mos after seizure free. Luckily, left side returned the third day. Still have an MRI with contrast to check what they couldn’t identify on a previous MRI. I am trying to titrate off clobozam, but had to do a three day eeg and the MRI (7/11) to see if I have epilepsy. No seizures since day after surgery.
I received great care at MUSC and like the surgeon but still think I could have waited (felt fine) or something got screwed up in surgery.
Surgically and physically doing very well. Playing golf(badly) attending cardiac rehab but concerned about neurology. My wife has been great but try not driving for a week-let alone 6 months.
