About Me (In My Own Words)
Hello Adam Pick and Heart Valve Surgery community,
I had my mitral valve repair on Halloween, just 13 days ago. My procedure was a minimal invasive robotic surgery . I was released 4 days later. I'm already walking almost 2 miles/ day and doing a series of PT exercises each day.
I know heart surgery is a big thing, but after having this procedure, I'm amazed. It really is a big deal!! I still have sharp pains where my incisions are, but I have difficulty monitoring when to take my tylenols. Also, I have been having dry coughing attacks the past few days that probably contribute to my sharp pains. Also, I'm experiencing ocular migraines that some of you have mentioned. I
just need to realize that I'm not in a race but in recovery and need to be patient. Sorry everyone, I didn't intend to make this post a whining session, but one of gratitude.
I am so so grateful for this website and comments from the
community. There is so much valuable information available. I am so happy that I found the website after I was diagnosed. I realized that I had options to choose the type of procedure for my mitral valve repair and to choose the cardiac surgeon who provide those options. It was OK to get opinions from different surgeons , not just go with the one recommended by my cardiologist. I'm still surprised that this information was all available on this website. Also, a big shout out to Adam Pick's book the Patient's Guide to Heart Valve Surgery. It has good post op advice. I know it is normal to be nervous before surgery but it's better than normal before surgery to be confident that I made the right choices. A grateful thank you to my surgeon, Joanna Chikwe for treating me like I'm your only patient and for your calm presence. I agree with everything that the community and the staff at Cedars-Sinai say about you. However, you are better in person.
