About Me (In My Own Words)
My first open heart surgery was on 6/7/16 and performed by Dr. Paul Lapunzina at Kaiser San Francisco. 5 days before this date, I never had heart issues. Suddenly while at lunch with friends, I felt an odd massive sensation in my chest and immediately knew something was not right.
I was (AM) an athlete. I played volleyball in college and in my adult life continued playing volleyball and had recently picked up cycling. Life was good, GREAT! I have a wonderful loving husband and three very young daughters 4, 6, and 7 at the time. I was only 38.
I was rushed to the hospital, checked myself into the ER, and my life has never been the same. I had my aortic valve replaced with a St. Jude mechanical valve. I prayed I would never have to endure that again. I had hoped all was fixed and life would resume once I fully recovered from the surgery.
I was recently transferred to the Stanford team for treatment. Under the guidance of Dr. Weyand, Dr. Liang, and Dr. Miller I will be having my second open heart surgery to replace my ascending aorta and to get a new (slightly larger) mechanical valve.
