About Me (In My Own Words)
I was born with a bicuspid valve and never knew anything about it until I got a terrible sore throat and was misdiagnosed in January 2009. My PCP did not even test me for strep and 2 weeks later, after I was feeling better he told me I had a murmur. I was in disbelief. My nursing student girlfriend finally convinced me to get an echo. I had 60% regurgitation of my aortic valve and had it replaced with a porcine valve in August 2009. I was 26 at the time. Less than 5 years later, I started feeling fatigued and had night sweats. I had a HACEK category C infective endocarditis. The first round of PICC antibiotics worked, but the infection came back. I am now scheduled to get my aortic valve and root replaced again as well as a mitral repair or replacement this August 2014 at 5 years and 1 day from my last surgery. I have not decided on a valve yet.
