My PCP discovered a heart murmur in the summer of 2023. An echocardiogram & a follow-up TEE confirmed moderate to severe mitral regurgitation and we decided to monitor it. A year later we decided it was time for surgery. I had a trusted surgeon with an excellent reputation. We decided on open heart surgery to repair my mitral valve. I had no apparent symptoms so it was surreal to think of "choosing" to have such a major surgery. My brother had the same condition, same surgery, and same surgeon six years earlier, so he tried to prep me on what to expect.
