Great to hear from you! My friend has connected me with the pediatric cardiologist at Massachusetts General Hospital. I will take my son to an international hospital in Shanghai for a thorough echocardiogram this Friday (finger crossed!), so that I can provide more information/clinical data to the specialist in US. US hospitals definitely offer much better service as compared to China, partly because we have a large population here and partly because great hospitals are only available in certain cities such as Shanghai and Beijing. I also bought several books from Amazon.com, written by American parents of children with CHD. I’m amazed again by the amount and availability of information from the US. You’re lucky being an American :-). The more I learn, the more confident I am in your swift recovery.

Yes, we are connected by the “heart” despite the physical distance. It’s great to “feel great” as you are at a golden age of your life. And having gone through/the prospect of going into a surgery makes people think seriously about what is the most important thing in life. Washington DC is a nice city by the way.
My son is having an echocardiogram end of next January. The specialist thinks it’s too early to decide on open heart surgery versus balloon dilation because his trans-valvular gradient is 64 mmHg and he’s too young. Although the doctor we are seeing is the best in Shanghai and he thinks it will be a minor procedure, I’m thinking of seeking a second opinion by consulting with a pediatric cardiologist in US. Maybe I will visit the States in the near future. I missed the old days when I studied in Boston.

Shari Rosenberg Hi Jennifer! Sorry it took me awhile to get back to you! That's a lot to be thinking about with weighing one procedure against another. I had two heart surgeries when I was a baby, but the technology was really different back then (I was born in 1987) so I'm sure things would be done really differently now. Good luck figuring things out, especially if you decide to get a second opinion. Please let me know if you have any specific questions for me (or anything else)- I'm not sure how helpful I could be because the medical system here is probably different than it is in China (and because I'm a lot older than your son!) but if you have any questions that I might be able to help with, please don't hesitate to let me know. You also might be interested in the Adult Congenital Heart Association site; I'm not sure how helpful it will be but it's always worth a look (achaheart.org). I just discovered it recently and it's pretty interesting-geared more towards adults, but at least it can give you a sense of what's out there.
Please let me know how things go- you can just keep posting to this site because I'm always alerted when there's a post here.

A little slow-going, but it was just so nice to be moving. I loved Seattle soooo much and would love to be back there- but I'm not sure if that's where I'm going right now.
