Hi Norma - I think when I was about a week away from surgery I was torn between two conflicting emotions - run away as fast as I could, or go directly to the hospital and get it done and over with. I hope you are looking forward to seeing the surgery in your rear-view mirror and getting on with recovery. The worst part (waiting!) is almost over! Meredith Holiday, FL

I am 64 and had mitral repair on April 11. Now I am doing fantastic. Kayaking, hiking and walking. It took awhile post op but so worth it, I can keep up with my family now. If you have any questions you can send me a note.

Hello, My name is Susanne. I had a very similar history -- rhf at 12, failed gym during high school and then was finally diagnosed at 25. Told to wait and and wait and wait; then last year at 56 the valve failed. I was absolutely terrified. Family, friends, spouses are terrific, but they can't understand. I was active and productive, but it takes time to get back to that. There's a terrific youtube video from a woman a few years younger who gave great advice on what to pack and what to expect -- stephaniesurgery. There's a ton of paperwork the doctor and surgical teams will give you at the most inopportune time, but the more you ask others who have been through it, the better you may be. All the best

Norma - I will be thinking of you next Friday during your surgery at The Heart Hospital Baylor Plano. It is such a high quality heart hospital and you will be in such good hands. I had MV Repair in February 2017 at the same hospital at age 60. Let us know how you are doing! Stay positive and trust in the skill and competence of your surgeon and make sure you get your rest and allow your body to recover fully!

I know it's hard not to worry. Did your surgeon suggest anti-anxiety meds to help prior to surgery? I had a script and used several. Definitely the night prior to surgery it would help you sleep. I used one the night before surgery and I did sleep well. My surgery was NOv29, 2017. I had mitral valve repair and a maze procedure. There were bumps along my recovery route but I am doing well. Welcome to the community, Norma. I am 69 years old, and have had a very healthy life, until advised I needed mitral valve repaired last year. Had surgery last December, no problems, uneventful recovery and my scar has healed so well, you can hardly see it. It is amazing what these wonderful surgeons can do these days!
