Nancy Connor Hi Kathleen, Yes, i will be getting the bovine {tissue valve} My surgery is 3/12 - tomorrow!
I was born with a bicuspid aortic valve and had the first replacement in 2010. Unfortunately, the first valve only lasted 11 years mainly because the surgeon used a valve that was too small. Be sure to pick your surgeon wisely; go to the best and most experienced person you can find, even if it means traveling a bit farther from your home. Good Luck!

Nancy, I'm sorry I missed your COVID/visitors question from some time ago. I was not allowed visitors and that remains the policy at the hospital as far as I know. It was not great but not as bad as I had feared. You really are occupied with nurses, imaging, and getting back into the eating and walking routine and the days go a little faster than you would think. Hope it all goes well! Joe

Nancy Connor Thank you Joe! My surgery has been moved up to Friday, 3/12/21. The hospital is allowing one visitor now so I feel better. I had a lot of complications the first time, I think that’s why I was so uneasy. Hopefully all will go well this time!

FYI - you can get a second opinion from Cleveland Clinic. Just send your records for their review and they get back to you within probably two weeks. Reason I mention them is that they are very into smaller incisions and they can give their thoughts on that. Anne Shannon

Hi Nancy, You should definitely get another opinion. I just heard about a 93 year old man from here in Wisconsin who went to the Mayo Clinic in Arizona and got a replacement valve for his failing first replacement valve, and they did it all percutaneously (through the femoral vein in his leg)! He had it done on Good Friday, and is doing just fine. I know his was an experimental case, but I\'m sure it is something that will be available to everyone soon. Maybe you can hold off long enough to have it done percutaneously. I hope you do more research. Deb

Hi Nancy! I\'m so sorry to hear your valve is failing so soon . . . it does happen but it is rare. If I was in your position, I would get a second opinion at one of the major heart centers - Cleveland, Mayo, Hopkins, etc. I had my surgery at Cleveland and they make evaluations very easy - just go to their web site, get the phone number of the consulting nurse, and call. You don\'t live all that far from Cleveland so you may want to go there for a complete work-up. Please keep us posted on your progress. Ricki Shine

In one of my journal entries I expressed what if I had handled things differently. A friend reading my journal quickly pulled me aside and said don\'t blame yourself. We do what we know to do. You are right - I had known for so long that I needed the surgery that I became too complacent about it. When my symtoms appeared I just jumped right in to get fixed, never thinking to question the doctors about anything other than a perfect outcome. Now I am wondering what I could have done differently. Maybe nothing.

Nancy, sorry to hear about this. I also work in the hospital where I had my surgery done. Although rare I have heard of tissue valves needing to be replaced for the very reason you mention. You made the best decision for you at the time. You will get through this again. :-)
