Hi MaryAnne! I saw your post re: antibiotics and colonoscopies. Your gastro doctor was correct, that the guidelines now are to not prescribe antibiotics for heart-valve patients before colonoscopies. I did not receive any before my procedure in '17. But for teeth cleanings and dental procedures, we need them for sure.

Glad to hear your Mom is getting by day by day. It will get better!
I actually bought a Lazy Boy recliner before surgery. I love it for watching TV or reading. I tried sleeping in it but I missed my own bed. Have you tried a rental store?
I also used a small stepstool to get in to my bed as it was fairly high. That helped a lot.
If I think of any other ideas, I will let you know.
Also ask the nurses or the social liason person at the hospital before you leave. I found the people there very knowledgable and helpful. Also there is a discharge meeting held for each patient before they leave and the person who does that meeting is wonderful(forget her name). She helped me with lots of questions.
You are a great suppport for your Mom. God Bless!

Hi MaryAnne,
I noticed that you were from Exeter and had surgery at BW. I am glad to hear you are doing well post surgery! I am going to BW December 9 for a mitral valve repair with Dr. Aranki - this after a 2.5 week delay due to a cold and cough. I have lived in the Exeter area for over 20 years, just recently moved to Newington Village. Nice to see a neighbor on the board!

MaryAnne Jardis Hi Suzanne
That is awesome!! You are the second one recently that had surgery at brighams beside myself. And you lived in Exeter! That is amazing! I have lived here all my life. Love the area and so close to Boston to take advantage of the great hospitals. Good luck with your surgery. The hospital is great. I had dr. Shekar who is chief of cardiac surgery. He is wonderful!
If you ever want to give me a call with any questions or to chat my number is 603-778-9373.
Nice to meet you! And again healing thoughts are being sent your way!
Suzanne Moore Thank you, MaryAnn! I bet our paths have crossed at some point over the years - funny to meet here!

hello maryann!
happy thanksgiving! thank you again for your wonderful words about dr. shekar! as monday draws nearer, we're coming up with tons of questions about our time and brigham & womens and everything else. my mom is feeling super anxious, understandable so. she is 65, in good health, and desperate to have it over with, while simultaneously dreading it.
how are you feeling now, about a month post-op?
i hope that your feeling well enough to be enjoying today with your family, but that everyone is doing the cooking for you. ☺️

MaryAnne Jardis Hi Sam
I am feeling pretty good at 4.5 weeks post op. Every day you do get stronger and I have had a few less productive days. I learned to just go with the flow and my cardiologist at brighams is there for me 24/7 so I have called him many times with questions which has helped. I am 62 years old so pretty close to your moms age. If she would like to chat with me on the phone feel free to call me at 603-778-9373. I would be happy to chat with you or her regarding the hospital or the surgery or even after. Just do something special this weekend and go in on Monday with a wonderful attitude. Your moms body will feel the positivity! All the best to your mom and you. You are a blessing to be there for her!

Hi Mary Anne, I just read one of your previous postings and I felt a need to respond to your question. I have had cancer three times in the past and I had my Aorta valve replaced this past Feb. I have had a fast recovery, nothing unusual with my recovery and actually, I had a fast recovery with feeling just great after a couple of weeks. I can do anything I want, no restrictions and have more energy than ever. I work from early morning until bedtime as we have 2 young grandchildren that live with us. I know you are worried but it will be over before you know it, you will feel so much better and be on the road to better health. Keep your faith and know that a lot of people are thinking of you, praying for you and I know you will be on here with nothing but praise for having this done.

MaryAnne Jardis Hi Joan
You just made my day! Several others on this site have had cancer before so it is nice to see that you all survived and are leading normal lives. It is like a double dose of health issues to worry about. But we have survived them all so I am thinking positive. I too have three wonderful grandchildren and know that this will help me to keep up with them...lol!
Thank you for taking the time to post regarding the cancer. And God is on my side watching over me so I feel confident. Thanks again!
