Hello Louise! I've been meaning to reply to your kind note to me sooner, but I'm still battling some issues. I've been fighting off (and very unsuccessfully so far!) pleurisy since January. I've been on Prednisone four times but it isn't getting rid of it. So, back to the cardiologist today and a CT Scan with contrast of my chest on Friday. I just hope it provides some kind of answers and maybe how to get rid of it. I like my cardiologist and feel he's a good doctor, but he unless the CT shows something, he doesn't know what else to do. I may need to go to a pulmonologist or something. And still have the widespread neuropothies to deal with in May :(
I'm still doing Cardiac Physical Therapy and have about 8 sessions left!!! But things could be a lot worse, and I try to remind myself of that - especially when so many heart brothers and sisters have had a really hard time after surgery.
I hope that your recovery continues to go well and hope that you are feeling well.
Take care.

Hi Louise, I've been thinking about some of my heart brothers and sisters that I've noticed haven't posted anything in a while. You were among those to send kind words and wishes to me, so I just wanted to say hello and hope that you are doing well. For me, the heart surgery part has gone well and continues to. It's all the other things that have very strangely made their appearance since heart surgery that are driving me crazy.
Don't feel a need to reply if you haven't time right now or the desire. I just wanted to wish you well and good health. Take care.

Louise Llewellyn Hello Jim, thanks so much for getting in touch. I'm pleased to hear you're doing well. It's just a relief to have it done with, isn't it. What things are you having problems with?
My immediate recovery was pretty tough with 8 days in intensive care and HDU. I left hospital after 13 days. It's now nearly 13 weeks post op and I'm feeling much better, if not a little tired still. I've realised it takes longer to get your strength back than you anticipated.
How are you feeling in yourself? Something I didn't anticipate was the emotional impact. I suppose facing all the risks of surgery and the humbling experience of recovery does that. I don't know about you, but I'm ready to make some life changes. It makes you address your priorities doesn't it, which is a good thing.
Look forward to hearing all your news. Take care, Louise

Jim O'Brien Hello Louise, it's nice to hear from you. You had a harder time than me with your immediate recovery. I was in ICU for 3 days - the worst part, was having the breathing tube down my throat for all of that time except about the last 5-6 hours. I left the hospital after 7 days. Heart wise, things are good.
Since the surgery, I've had numbness in my left hand, left foot, part of my left buttocks, and several bouts of double vision. I've seen a neurologist who did an EMG and Conductive Nerve Study and found that I have Carpal Tunnel in both hands. But he said "the carpal tunnel is the least of my problems" and that I have widespread neuropothies throughout my body. At this point he doesn't know why but will do a lot of blood work in May to begin the process of elimination. My other nagging issue is the rash that keeps coming back on my arms & legs, and a little on my chest. I'm beginning to think it might be the drug, Hizentra, that I infuse myself for my Common Variable Immunodeficiency disease. But, things could be much worse!
You're right about the time taking longer than expected to get your strength back and the emotional impact. I just went back to work this past Sunday, and when I get home I have to take a nap everyday. I'm going to Cardiac Physical Therapy (and will be until mid-April) and I too am trying to make some life changes.
Good luck to you for a continued successful and speedy recovery.
Take care, Jim

Louise Llewellyn Hi Jim, I'm glad the operation went well but I'm sorry to hear you're contending with a lot of other difficulties. I hope they find the cause in May and are able to resolve it for you. You are surely due an easier time of it now.
I've read on this site that it takes some patients up to 12 months plus to get full energy back which is reassuring and makes you realise that a slow, steady recovery is normal.
It's good to hear you're back at work Jim. I wish you all the best in your recovery and hope you have positive news in May. Here's to taking it one step at a time. Take care and bye for now, Louise

Hello Louise, I was in Cardiac Physical Therapy today and got to thinking about some of the Heart Valve Brothers and Sisters I haven't seen on the site in a while. I hope it's just because you're busy! I hope that you are well on the road of recovery. I've had a few set backs, but am working through them and glad to finally be able to do physical therapy (I've been 4 times now).
Best wishes for good health to you and your family.

Hi Louise
I was just reading your story and noticed you saying should your mitral valve not be repairable you would would need a mechanical valve.
I had a mitral valve replacement done 3 years ago when I was 60.
As the valve was not repairable I had the choice between a mechanical or a tissue valve. I opted for the tissue as the quality of life would be far better than the mechanical.
The down side with the tissue is another replacement operation in approximately 18 years and I figured hugh progress will be made in heart surgery in 18 years.
I just thought i would drop you a note and wish you all the very best with a speedy recovery and a long and happy life.

We've had similar histories, but you're younger than I am, being 64. More than age, I believe having a positive mental attitude and being intentional is most important.

I understand you are anxious. I had mv repair at Cleveland clinic a year ago and also was very nervous. But the operation went smoothly, the hardest part was in intensive care. After that it was much easier than I expected. I had much less pain and was able to do much more than I expected. I hope you too discover that this is easier than you expect. You will be back to normal very soon. I wish you the very best!

Louise,
I had mitral heart value repair surgery on March 20, 2014. My regular doctor found a heart murmer during an annual exam and referred me to a Cardioligist in their practice. After some tests, he referred me to a heart surgeon whose specialty was repairing mitral heart values. My surgery was 2 1/2 hours and everything went well. I followed the prescribed rehab after surgery. Everything should go well for you and I wish you the very best. Henry C. Cole- Noblesville, Indiana
