Not sure if you received my other e-mail. I did not have any pericarditis, I know that is is quite painful and quite pesky, hard to get rid of. A good cardiologist is really critical. I had an excellent interventional cardiologist do the follow-up. I do not have any data on the occurrence of pericarditis as a function of surgery, although it did not pop up during my research.
I might recommend following up with Jacqueline Cook. She had MVR repair at CC robotic with Dr. Suri, she did have pericarditis so she can probably provide some guidance. She may also provide some guidance about her response and recovery.

Lise Bowles Thank you Shannon, I am back on an anti inflammatory called malaxicam, I stopped the colchicine which was making me very sick. All in all I am feeling a lot better! I still dont understand why at 4 1/2 months out I am as inflamed as I am internally, but at least with the Med I am able to function in life and hopefully as time goes on the inflammation will lessen and I will be able to go off the anti inflammatory ! So onward and upward to us both, today starts the new year and I hope and pray this year will be great for us both!
Thank you for asking! Lise

Shannon Gray OH my, I know you must feel frustrated. Especially to have this happen so late after surgery. I have read that hypothyroidism and also any autoimmune disorders may contribute to this. The autoimmune issues is not completely founded, yet, but it is a possibility. Hoping you find relief soon. I still am nervous about it happening again...it's a nasty beast! Sounds like you are doing all the right things.

Hello Lise;
I was reading your journal as I am having a Robotic Mitral repair at Mayo Rochester in March. Your experiences seem to match another very athletic young woman that had the same surgery at CC and she reported the same significant discomfort that you reported. My surgeon at Mayo said that they use 3 incisions instead of the 6 you reported and patients are usually discharged within 3 days and back to work within 3-4 weeks. I would love to "pick your brain" about what to expect and what else to ask the surgeon before I have this procedure. Want to make sure I'm fully prepared mentally, physically and emptionally before having it done

Phyllis Petersen I didn't realize that there was that much difference in the same robotic surgery. I did notice that another person on here seemed to have somewhat different incisions, although we had the same procedure by the same surgeon. Good luck Lise in getting past your issues to where you were before and to you Ben when you do have your surgery.

Ellen Leng Ben, after reading others experiences with the mini-thoracotomy (right chest wall) with or without the robotic repair, I elected a mini-sternotomy (front of the chest) for my mitral repair (9/28/16) though I had the option for the mini-thoracotomy. I saw that many were having pain, numbness, and seemed to have more pleurisy with the thoracotomy than with the sternotomy. Going through the chest muscles decreases the initial length of pain, but in the long run going through the sternum causes less problems as they don't have to cut muscle and nerves. Also, as they are "right there", the cardiopulmonary bypass is more direct and if there are unexpected issues they are easier to solve. And they don't have to go through the pleural (lung) cavity to get to the heart, so less chance of irritation and inflammation later.
I am 12 weeks out and have about a 4 inch scar to the lower sternum. It's been pretty much pain free for the past 4 weeks, though it is a little sore as I've been rowing in rehab for 3 sessions (not enough even for tylenol).
I recognize that there is a lot of interest in the mini-thoracotomy and being able to get back to work and life sooner, but there seem to me to be more young, healthy people with problems with this procedure.
Best to you in your decision making :)

Phyllis Petersen Ellen, It's my understanding that they do not cut the muscles anymore, but spread them. There is still some scar tissue (I've had this done for back surgery), but much less and recovery is fast. I didn't know going in that initial pain is worse from the side, but I was able to drive after 1 week (I didn't yet want to) and you don't have the worry about sitting in the front seat of the car. I'm amazed at the range of recovery even with the same procedure and same surgeon. They don't seem to be able to really predict who will have what kind of recovery and what issues, and they are pretty honest about admitting that. Why did Lise, who's the same age but in fabulous shape, have so many issues while I, who's in decent shape but have slipped up a lot in the last year, has had any easier time so far. There are just so many variables! In the end, almost everyone seems to be better than they were before, just the timeframes may not be the same.

Hi Lise, this is Bert. I just read your note you posted on my guestbook.
I think it's impossible to know all the details of your particular fallout but I can tell you that I did have many of your symptoms in the first year post-op. What happened to me is that the pains and rounds of AFIB and breathing restrictive feelings got better very slowly during that first year. I didn't start feeling closer to "normal" till 2 years had passed. I have had to accept a new normal of some restrictiveness in my breathing still, a resting heart rate that is about 20 beats too fast, and a major slow down in my running (I just can't get enough breath and my heart rate is too high). I don't live in Cleveland and so I can't just drive up there to do follow ups and they have not been interested or communicative with me at all. Finding local help has been almost impossible and they're all kind of guessing as to what is wrong (or insinuate that I'm fabricating symptoms, or that because I can "run" at some level, I must be doing great). I think I will need to do another push towards getting a re-evaluation at a respected clinic though because I have concern about just ignoring these sensations long term. Anyway I hope that helps in some way.

Amy Dorsey Lise, having gone through the same procedure with the same surgeon and having the same issues… I want to let you know that I'm on week seven now and starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel! I had all of your symptoms and they started to subside by week four with just minimal discomfort. I know that seems like a long time away when you're in so much pain and maybe you will find that happens sooner for you than it did for me but it will happen! It seems like the doctors could never get my pain under control… Same issue you are having, so by week four it was a welcome relief to start feeling a little better. I'm here for you and hope you start feeling some relief. How are the lidocaine patches working? With all of the nerve damage we have from the cutting and manipulation from surgery, don't expect that pain to go away for good for a while. I go through bouts of pain and then numbness and then pain… It switches on and off as I believe it's the nerves repairing or trying to. The lidocaine definitely helps me. Keep us posted and keep your head up! 💗 Vent when you need to💗💗💗

PJ Fugitt Lise- I asked myself the same question!!! Determination! Wanting a great team of doctors who would make great decisions based on all the tests in front of them and on the patient's best interest and well being. I found that at the Cleveland Clinic. You have family with you and another family- this heart family- praying for your well being. Blessings to you on this day- the Lord's Day.

I did all of this using uber for the first time. Also across from the museum is the Case history museum and the Botanical Garden which is beautiful!!! There is a shuttle I believe you can take to these places to. Enjoy the weekend and get out of the hotel to breathe!!!! Hang in there! We are there with you all the way!!!!!

Hope all goes according to plan. As you have seen Amy Dorsey was a week ahead of me with Robotic surgery by Dr. Gillinov. Lise Bowles No, mine was always the 16th at CC, when I first started this adventure back in May (I think) it was a different date and that was because I was going to a different hospital in Atlanta. So you decided to stay at Fairview? I think that sounds very reasonable, 5 miles from home, (I am jealous) 😜 And you already have had all your testing done there. I am sorry they changed the date on you, it's hard when you are all settled on getting it done! I hope the rescue works for you, remember though, it's really light, it's not for severe anxiety. If you need something stronger won't your cardiologists office give it to you? They know what you are going through!

Hi Lise! You're so sweet! I was wondering the same thing when I saw my incisions! The 5 inch incision is more like 4 inches. I also have a 1 inch incision directly under my nipple And 4 puncture sites. They definitely did the robotic but I do have those two incisions. I thought about posting one of the pictures, but it shows half of my breast so I opted not to LOL. Just so you know, they are healing so nicely! No one will ever know I had surgery by the way they are looking now. They said minimally invasive is more painful than the sternotomy because they have to go through muscle and nerves and I had more muscle than most to maneuver around. I am at the two week post mark and finally the pain is manageable. I had my post op appointment yesterday and met with Dr. Gillinov's nurse. She told me not to worry about the blood clot and she hoped the ER did not scare me. She said it is in the small veins in will never get to the deep veins.
I have tried sleeping everywhere you can think of. Most comfortable thing so far has been in a recliner, but if you have enough pillows you can get comfortable in bed. I don't think you will need to go buy a recliner. If I were at my house in Virginia I would not have a recliner. I am just taking advantage of my dads but most of the time I'm in the bed when I'm sleeping. Today was the first day I could almost lay flat without excruciating pain. Little by little I'm getting more sleep every night, but at first don't be surprised if you only get an hour at a time. I wish I was still going to be here for you because I would love to meet you in person. I'll be thinking of you and praying you have a speedy recovery with less pain than I had. 💗💗💗

Lise Bowles Amy that's great that the pain has gotten more bearable! What are you taking for it if anything? I hate painkillers they usually make me nauseous, and I dread the idea of having to take them for a long time, WAH, WAH, WAH, I sound like a whiner! Yuk, I know you know how I feel, who ever plans on this in their life story, whether you are 62 or 39 like yourself!
Btw, I am not as concerned about the cosmetic aspect of the incisions, (they are your badge of courage) as I was just interested in why he approached it differently. Maybe because you are so muscular. I do not have that problem, sigh, 😜, so that's one I can check off my list! Have you visited PJ? I keep thinking about her and wishing her well. Thank you for your support

I'm on Oxy and Tramadol. I don't like being on them either but they are the only ones that work so far. You will want to be on whatever works for you!!
I'm thinking maybe he started robotically and then had to do the incisions because of the muscle. He told my parents I would be really sore because he had to move some of my chest muscles towards my back and then move it all back to the chest. My back muscles felt like they were on fire for a few days. So thankful my pain is lessening!!!

Hi Lise, the aftercare was very good for me, however, I did notice a difference between the weekend staff and the weekday staff. The weekday staff seemed more helpful. My surgery was on Friday, so I tried to sleep through most of Saturday and Sunday. The pain meds helped. Two hits on the button, and I would sleep for another two or three hours. I did wake up to watch the NBA final game Sunday night. I'm not a NBA fan, but since everybody in the hospital was, I felt obligated to pull for Cleveland!
I feel that you just have to pay attention to what is going on. My daughter, who just started her fifth year as a general surgery resident, was there until Monday. She had lot of experience with what I was going through. However, I think she and my wife enjoyed spending time together than worrying with me. Anyway, just communicate well with the staff. They're human and have their jobs to do, but they really seemed to want to help, some more than others. One thing that I have found to be the case in this whole journey is that you need to be proactive, but in a nice way. You should do fine!

Hi Lise,
I just wanted to put your mind at ease about Cleveland Clinic. I didn't mean to scare anyone with my experience. I feel bad I posted it in so much detail, but a handful of people were really wanting to know how everything went and I was so traumatized I needed to talk about it. I really think it being my first time in the hospital ever it was a bigger impact on me then maybe it would have been for someone else. Don't worry your mind over that! Just make sure you voice your needs. I've been back twice since I was discharged and everything was fine both times. If you feel you need better attention just make sure you speak to a nurse practitioner. The lady who was so wonderful for me after everything I experienced...her name is Sandyi Zampino. She was my angel💗 I have one more appointment next week and I'm going to make sure I find her :-) I think I will just be leaving Ohio when you have your surgery. I wish I was going to be here so I could visit you! PJ is in recovery now. I'm going to visit her next week and see how she is doing 💗 Another plus for you is that your surgery is not at the end of the week like mine was. So you'll probably have all of the more senior nurses.

Amy Dorsey My situation was weird. They were trying to wean me from The pain button too early I think...then I started having complications with my bladder and they took me off pain meds overnight. I didn't know why they took me off the pain meds until a new senior nurse I was assigned that day told me the next day they had to because of sepsis. I didn't even know what that was. But that night without meds was torturous. At that point all the initial pain from ICU was back the next day when they wanted to release me! All of my vitals were where they wanted them to be but my pain levels were up the roof! I told them I did not feel comfortable leaving because of the pain level so they started feeding me pain killers again and released me the next day, but the pain wasn't fully managed when I was discharged. I think my case just had a bunch of hiccups. Just remember that lady's name I told you Sandi!! She will make sure you are taken care of 💗

Elaine Cutri We walked around campus in the early evening and felt safe and comfortable. It's almost like its own city. There are several hotels on or at the edge of campus (it's huge). The Intercontenental Hotel & Conference Center is next to the Cardio Vascular building. It has a nice restaurant called Table 45. We could walk there and back to where we were staying, Intercontenental Suites. It was a challenge for me due to fluid behind my right lung, but doable. There is a free shuttle that can take you to University Circle where there Is the lovely museum of art, good place for lunch). We used Uber very comfortably for trips to downtown or Little Italy (good food in both areas). We were there several weeks and never rented a car, shuttle and Uber did the trick.
The first time we went to CC, we stayed at the Double Tree just East of campus. It was a little far to walk and not as comfortable to walk around that area.
Between downtown and Cleveland Clinic looks like an empty shell of the city, but downtown was buzzing. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame was another nice diversion.

Elaine Cutri Yes you can get there, but I don't remember the path. The buildings are pretty logically arranged. As an engineer, I was pretty impressed with the whole experience. I was on guard to make sure that I felt safe medically (I've been around this block before), vitals, drugs, procedures, and I think they did a great job taking care of me. They were good about sharing information, letting us digest it and make decisions as needed. Your family can stay with you when you're in a non-ICU room, but the bench/futon was not the most comfortable for my husband. Sometimes I sent him to the hotel, just to make him get a good nights rest.
