Hello, Keith - I can't believe I am on the other side of OHS. No more anxious waiting! Based on your journal, you are now about 4 months post-op. I am 11 days out from surgery and doing quite well (see my journal for today). The On-X is noted only when my heart rate is up after some activity or (crazy enough!) when on the toilet doing business. It doesn't wake me up at night. I suppose I will see if things change in time. All the best to you :)

Great to hear from you and glad you are doing well. Yes, it definitely is a good feeling to have the surgery behind you! I continue to do very well. Slowly working back to the condition I was in pre-op and hopefully surpass it. I had my first post op echo a week ago. All was well. Everything seemed to be within the nominal range for my valve.

Hi, Keith, you are looking great. Glad to see your pix and read the post. When you mentioned that the surgeon de-calcified your heart I wondered if it is the myocardium (outer surface) or inside the chambers? I thought calcium was inside our arteries. No wonder you're skipping beats. Thankful you had best of care and know what's good for you to stay on the road to wellness. Our family (Marty, me, Rod all have a.fib and take Coumadin (except Rod...Pradaxia). We compare notes. I am considering ablation this year. We will see. Keith Heflin Connie, I think we're talking about inside the chamber. Here is a quote from the surgery report. "The area that was most heavily calcified was the area of the membranous septum,where we had to take special care to avoid injury to the conduction bundle."

Hey Keith - I am also a mountain biker and had my surgery was on July 28, 2016. I had to take an 8 week break from mountain biking which was hard considering the fantastic summers we have here in Oregon - but I was amazed and pleased with the outcome. I have an On-X valve as well. I would not be surprised if you will not only regain your full capacity but will do considerably better post OP. Great timing for your surgery - you can still enjoy summer and fall biking. I had a partial sternotomy (4 inch cut) and the surgeon used plates which - as far as I can tell - reduced pain and got me "up and running" again relatively quickly. Was on heavy painkillers for only one day, back at work 2.5 weeks after surgery and skipped recovery altogether (my recover was bike riding). I wish you all the best.

Keith Heflin Juergen, thanks for the encouragement. I'm supposed to get a partial sternotomy too. I don't know about plates though. I would like to get up to Oregon and ride. I've heard the Oak Ridge area is great. Like you I'll probably be doing my own cardiac rehab.

The last surgery was more than 25 years ago. She lived a normal & productive life for 25+ years with the condition. Technology has only improved!
