Hi Janea, I am just past my 2nd anniversary of my AVR. I do recall not being enthused about food for a while. The bumps along the way are frustrating especially when you are trying to do everything you should be doing to start healing and get your energy and enthusiasm back. Having valve surgery is definitely a test in patience and determination. Just know that while you may not notice it every day you are making progress and it will call come in time. Thoughts and prayers are with you as you work to get through this current issue and we hope to hear you reporting feeling better very soon.

Janea Christensen Thank you Kim! I just saw your post. My biggest hope is that after surgery I can have activity and energy in my life to continue to raise my kids. I hope so badly I can hike a mountain or run along side my 7 year old as I teach her to ride a bike. I am pretty limited right now activity wise. But I have great day to day energy. I am really hoping this surgery yields good results. It's a week from today!

Hi Janea.
I see that you live in the Seattle area. We just moved to PA from the Kitsap Peninsula. We lived in a little town called Hansville (20 mins. N. of the Kingston Ferry terminal) for almost two years. We LOVED it there! The cardiologist at the Bremerton Naval Hospital diagnosed me with mitral valve prolapse in May of 2014 and followed me until we moved in June of this year. He is the one who told me "it's time" for surgery. If we were still in the Seattle area, he would have sent me to Swedish. Instead, the day you go for your surgery, I will be meeting with my new cardiologist here in PA to discuss surgical options.
I am inspired by your journey and wanted to send you a little note and let you know that I am thinking about you and praying for you as you move closer to your surgery date.

Hi. I saw your question to Kyle about how he feels week 7. I will give you what I remember from my surgery. Mine was a full sternotomy on 1/9/14. I know that my husband was back at work by 1/21. We had some snow days that week in between so I don't know if he worked that week or not. My kids were 4,7 and 13. The 4 year old and I were home alone after the 21st and I was able to get the other 2 ready and to the bus for school. The biggest drawback was being unable to drive for four weeks. I needed to arrange rides for the kids at times. I know I went to my son's Valentine party at school at 5 weeks post op. I however didn't go back to work until week 10 or so. Hope that helps.

Janea Christensen That is very helpful! Thank you Clare. I wondered how hard it was going to be to do the morning routine with the kids by myself. But it sounds like you were able to do it after being home only 2 weeks. Wow!

Just read your story and was struck by the "honking goose". That was exactly the phrase my cardiologist used when he first heard mine. He said, "that's not a murmur is a damn honking goose!" I was about 35 at the time. Other people could hear it. My husband use to wake me up if he heard it during the night to make sue I had taken my beta blocker.
Wishing you good luck with your surgery. I have a feeling I will not be far behind you. I am thankful my kids are grown even though one is back home with my 4 year old grandson. It's so hard just being a mom that I can only imagine how major surgery will add to it. You will be in my prayers.

Janea Christensen Thank you Diane! So happy to have a fellow honker. I have never had anyone identify with my goose heart so it's good to know I am not the only one. When they did the surgery they said I had long flaps on my valve that stretched up and up. They were so amused by that. I think they flapped and created that unique goose sound. I wonder what your valve looks like. Best wishes to you as well!
