Hi Emily,
Hope all is going well for you, and your family as you prepare for your surgery. I also live in the metroplex and I had AV Replacement and Aortic Root replacement (aneurysm) 4.5 years ago at the Cleveland Clinic. I made it to 49 before having the surgery and chose a bovine valve. Haven't really looked on here in few months, but just had my annual check up yesterday, and was nostalgic.
My story is similar to yours, as I was born with a bicuspid AV and knew since I was a child that mine would need to be replaced. Having years to research it, I had decided on Cleveland long before I ever moved to Keller. If I had decided to do it locally, it would have been at Plano Heart with Dr. Ryan. I think you are in great hands..
I wish you the very best with your surgery. Adam's book provides a very realistic description of what to expect, so hopefully you have read that. Six weeks from now you will be amazed at how quickly you recovered.
Good luck..

Will keep you in my prayers for your upcoming surgery. I loved that the ICU room is your regular room and you don't ever have to leave it at Heart Hospital Plano! And staff was mostly great.

Hi Emily - In Nov., Adam posted a very interesting story about a young mom (Shannon) who had an aortic aneurysm repair in 2009 and an aortic mechanical valve installed in 2012. She initially thought that she would not have any more children because of the Coumadin therapy required with a mechanical valve. This story was of interest to me because my 19 year old daughter had a mechanical MV installed when she was 8. For many years, we thought she would require another OHS to swap out her mechanical valve for a tissue valve should she wish to have children. In the event that you were thinking a tissue valve was your only alternative for having kids, check this story out... http://www.heart-valve-surgery.com/heart-surgery-blog/2014/11/08/mechanical-valve-pregnancy/. Regards, Jeff V. (MV Repair, Cleveland Clinic, 12/4/14.)
There is nothing better than a great patient success story. So, when I received this update from Shannon about babies, bicuspid aortic valves, mechanical valve
