Dan D. Hi Jean, Thanks for reaching out. I stopped taking Tramadol for 2 weeks, but continued with my intermittent problems of exhaustion & lack of motivation. I decided that it wasn't Tramadol withdrawal & have actually resumed taking it, in small doses, since it seems to help with my fibromyalgia. I guess I can't even blame surgery (according to my doctors) at all for my intermittent current tiredness/apathy & therefore stopped posting on this heart surgery site on this problem.

Jean Raber The more I read on here, the more it looks like people continue to struggle with fatigue and apathy several months out of heart surgery. Hope you'll check in occasionally to let us know how you are.

I guess I'll find out how I'm doing the 15th and 22nd, when I see my cardiologist and hematologist. Right now I'm trying to get the gumption to ream clutter out of the bedroom, which is where we cram stuff when people come over unexpectedly. I dump stuff on the bed, and then sit in a chair to sort or toss. Then get up to get a cup of coffee. Rinse and repeat. It's gonna be a looonnng day ...

Dan D. Heart Sisters, thanks for checking in with me. I seem to wake up groggy & headachy almost every morning, even after consuming large quantities of coffee. Cardiologist said the physical stuff is going well & the mental stuff will improve over time. But after 4 months post-surgery, I'm bored and annoyed with myself. Anyway, stay in touch. Rita Savelis I feel headachy all the time too and keep wondering if might be a side effect of betablockers or anticoagulants. Not to mention the beginnings of another depressive episode and my mind racing with too many thoughts. Not a very cheery post, I know, but saying it to Dan D makes me feel better. Jean Raber Dan and Rita, sometimes I reach a point of diminishing returns with coffee. I love it when it works, but some days it doesn't, and drinking more just brings on a big old headache and gives me acid reflux. So I try to keep to my six allotted cups of half-caf per day. Nap or walk outdoors sometimes helps, but some days that takes all (or more) of the mental/emotional energy I can muster. Wish I could offer more than that I'm in the same boat with both of you in some ways, though my surgery is still pending.

Hi Dan. I saw where you posted about double vision a couple of times, and wondered if you found any solution to that problem? I have been plagued with that, spots over the eye, auras, numbness around the mouth, tongue, index fingers and hand which only last several seconds, since 11/23/14. May AVR/Aneurysm surgery was 9/8/14. Heart seems fine. Need answers.

Dan D. Hi Janice, I've found no medical solution to my problem. One doctor said "Go to the emergency room if it recurs" but I didn't take that advice because the double vision (as well as occasional dizziness) seemed related to an overabundance of light, especially when watching TV &/or a consequence of the pain-reliever drugs I've been taking (tramadol). The double vision didn't occur at night. When it did happen, I reduced the light and kept refocusing my eyes. It went away by doing this. If this problems keeps occurring, consider going to an eye doctor. The floaters (spots, auras) are probably normal. But the double vision and numbness should be checked out.

Recovery is not easy. Tried and anxiety are probably something most of us feel. My body has failed me multiple times , so different body symptoms make me anxious. I attempt to make sure by day's end I do something good for myself, walk as much as I can, make a nice dinner for my husband and kiss and hug him a lot!😉 Recovery can feel like work somedays. At least you don't have pain ,.my sternum hurts , usually at night! We are here, we are well, we are alive! Smile often! It changes your brain chemicals! Stay strong heart brother I am here for you! 💕

Dan D. Good to hear from you, heart sister! I'm that your sternum still hurts, so I should count myself fortunate in that regard. On the other hand, I'm constantly aware of my repairs when I simply twist the steering wheel of a car or push open a stuck door with both hands. My wife has been patient & supportive throughout so that's a positive thing. Based on the fact that I look "normal," most others think I am normal and, after 3 months, fully recovered. Anyway, it's people like you - that know what's involved - that give me strength.

Jeanette Davidson I know exactly how you feel. After I had my stroke I looked really normal and used to get frustrated with people because they didn't understand how it was still hard for me to find my words sometimes, concentrate, or not be fatigued. Surround yourself with people that are gentle, loving and understanding. That's why support groups are so effective because I really believe unless you've gone through something it's very hard to understand . As a mental health counselor , I obviously believe in psychotherapy. So listen to your internal Gut, you'll know if you need to reach out and talk to a professional. It really helps. And I am here for you. Try not to be so hard on yourself. I personally think it's going to take me one year to get back to normal. By telling myself that I release all my expectations ! Anyway, my expectations of full recovery were certainly less than a year, but that seems more accurate now. Anyway, I talked to a therapist before surgery. I liked her and may go back just check in. Stay strong!

Hello Dan, I am new here. I am 56 years old. Aortic stenosis. Replacement surgery is July 6 at Baptist hospital in Winston Salem NC. I think I am prepared but not really sure. As calm as I am now, it is possible as crunch time nears I'll get really scared with irrational fears. This website has already helped me considerably just hearing some of the stories that have been shared. I would not dare to assume I understand what you are going through. However, as I read your recent post a question came to me. I wondered what you may be looking forward to ? I find that as I talk about my upcoming surgery, i am looking forward to after recovery. There is much I want to do. Nothing monumental, Mainly serving God more and enjoying my family and hopefully grandchildren in the future. I wanted to share this and I truly hope I do not come across as a know it all. I will probably feel very different after surgery. I hope you continue to improve. thanks for listening. JPJ

John, good luck with your surgery. I'm so glad that your attitude remains calm. Bob, thanks for your feedback. Yes, sometimes controlling one's attitude is easier said than done, but it's the key to recovery. You & others helped get off the panic-train & back on track.

Dan, I understand how you feel. I think the anesthesia and meds, really mess up the system. It takes a while for the system to adjust. I assure you that things will get better. I still have days where I get depressed and have to push myself. I am ten months out. Cardiac rehab helped me tremendously to have the confidence that I can do everything I used to and more! Once you start driving and getting out more you should feel better. Please continue to vent to your heart brothers and sisters. We understand better than others that have not actually gone through the surgery. Take care Dan! Think positive! Surgery is behind you. Your heart sister in Michigan P.S. Hello Dan. I had every intention of getting a post to you before you headed in for surgery today but with my "gift of gab" and the tendency to write a story sometimes instead of getting to the point (like right now!) by the time I finished you would have had your surgery, been through the recovery part of your journey and I'd still be sitting here at the computer working the keyboard! So I will get to it by saying that I hope that when you wake up soon, your eyes pop open and you say to yourself: "All Done!" and thank God that this is behind you like the majority of us did! Then, I hope you find a night of rest and feel good about getting set for your journey of recovery about to begin. I also hope you have someone who will update us how you are doing fella. Terrie Syvertsen Dan- I am very glad to read that you are home and on with your recovery. I hope you have support now that you are home and I really feel for you with the "hiccups" as that has to be a miserable addition in your life! I have heard of several people having them too right after surgery and I am sure you can't get a heart pillow fast enough to block any movements! Hope they get to the bottom of this for you so you can move forward without the irritation! Isn't it nice to go to sleep at night knowing that the awful waiting period is over, you are thru to the healing side of recovery!? Take
your time and be patient with these next few weeks of adjustments. Sleep when you need to and enjoy any walking you are able to do. Happy for you Dan and look forward to hearing how you progress! Take care!

Dan, this is one of your heart sisters from Michigan. Try to rest as much tonight as possible. My surgeon didn't talk to me the morning of surgery. It bothered me some, he is the chief of cardiac surgery and a busy guy. So I let it go. My thoughts and prayers are with you tomorrow. If you get a chance you may want to read some of my suggestions for recovering (on my heart journal.) You will do well. Take care and will be looking for news that all went well. Dan, I had my Ross Procedure almost 19 years ago and I can remember the night before like it was yesterday. I didn't sleep much at all that night. The short version is that at some point I realized that it was literally "out of my hands". That night was a defining moment in my life. I came to the realization that there was no point in worrying about something that was outside of my control. You asked about what to do on the days leading up to the surgery.... Well about two days out, I went golfing with a group of friends. I had a great time. I also moved back to my parent's house since I was still in college...I needed a place to recover. We spent some time getting the guest bedroom setup for my recovery. It didn't require much, but we had to move furniture, setup the cable TV etc. I think the bottom line is to stay busy and try not to think too much about it. I know that is hard to do, but definitely spend as much time with friends and family and don't talk about the surgery. Just enjoy life.

Believe me, Dan, my good way of thinking did not happen over night, and I'm not that way every day. This website really helps. Shortly after my diagnosis, I was a mess! It wasn't pretty. Since I have about 5 more months to wait, I would normally drive myself crazy with thought I shouldn't be thinking. Instead of trying to keep myself from thinking about this valve replacement, which is unlikely to happen, I've decided to make it a way of relating to others on all levels. If that makes any sense. That way I quit making it all about me. :)

Hi Dan, What I've discovered with sharing my experience, is that some people have family members that have had this done years ago, and it helps to know that they went on to live many healthy vibrant years. Sometimes I feel like it prompts others to take a look at their health, or the health of their loved ones, which is never a bad thing. Sometimes I tell people about it, and I get a response that doesn't really seem appropriate, but that's okay too, because they don't know what it's like, just like I don't know what it's like to love through other unpleasant life experiences, and I sometimes have no words for people who are scared and suffering, so I convey the wrong message without meaning to. Sometimes people don't want to talk about it if they are scared for you, and I have to tell myself to understand where they are coming from as well. Best wishes to you!

Hi, Dan ~ I'm on a similar schedule, and just last night I was telling my brother how disappointed and surprised I was at the non-, even callous response of extended family members. I agree with Erica that we can set ourselves up for disappointment or hurt, but I also think that people can be disappointing and hurtful. One thing I did was reduce my email list to the few who are responsive and focused. And I had to realize that other people have their own ways of coping with mortality, pain, and vulnerability--namely, to distance themselves. I really do think fear operates here, so to speak.

Dan D. Honestly, I even got tired of communicating with people via email. My brother responds electronically to my announcement of surgery with "Thanks for the update, keep me posted." That seemed annoying, especially coming from a former psychologist. I started judging friends/relatives by whether they could get up the energy and time to call me. That was my "caring test." It's ridiculous, I know. But given my vulnerable position, I feel like I'm entitled to be ridiculous or petty if it helps me cope.

Bill Cherry Dan D., please listen to Pat Bluemel. Aside from the control issue, and I'm sure you don't want to be controlling. Anger leads to stress and stress within the body leads to a whole bunch of chemicals, hormones and other things that are damaging to guess what, your heart. Instead of anger, let it go, don't say anything but good things, be brave, stand tall, even if you have to stand alone, appreciate and be thankful for anything that comes your way, be strong and kick heart disease in the 'butt'. Just my thoughts.

Rhonda Rawles It was very surprising to me those that touched base and visited during my hospital stay and recovery and those that didn't. Often times it was backwards of what I would have expected. Bottom line is hang on to those that encourage you and want to be by your side, it's a good time to filter out relationships that are not uplifting and re-focus on those that nourish you.
