I am so sorry to hear this news about your mother. Unfortunately, a TAVI cannot be performed with a mechanical valve in place. If the mechanical valve is too calcified and it must be replaced, the surgery will indeed be open chest. The valve may be replaced with another mechanical valve, or possibly a tissue valve. Can you get another opinion to confirm what choices you may have?
