Dear Michael and family,
Congratulations on your anniversary. It is an important milestone.nI had MVR on 3/2/10 and am doing great. I too, have a daughter that was born with TOF, and we thought needed no further repairs. She is 25 and we were just told she needs a PVR within a year from now. What type of valve did you use? Also, did they say down the road it could be repaired percutaneously? Thank you so much for your input....there are not many on here with this type of repair.
Hello! Thank you for your note. My surgery is next Wednesday so I'm getting down to the last few days...your note was very much appreciated :) My mom is planning on posting on the journal for me. It's good to know that the journal helped Michael through his recovery. I'm just trying to keep my thoughts on what it will be like two or three months out instead of focusing on what it will feel like immediately after surgery! Thanks for keeping me in your thoughts.
Hi there Michael's parents (and Michael)!
Thanks for your response. My name is Shari Rosenberg and I started a journal (one entry) but will start writing in it more when my surgery gets closer (end of September). You are welcome to follow it of course if you are interested!
Best of luck to Michael! Thanks for this great journal!
Hi Michael! It looks like you're done with your journal but your story and positive energy have really made me feel better about things as a fellow young valve surgery patient! I am getting surgery in September, which is now right around the corner! And I found your journal which has been very positive and energetic. Best of luck to you on the next chapter of your life and thanks for sharing your story!
michael lucky for you I LOVE lemonade! put me down for 10 cups. I was out of town and missed it! My dad starts his cancer radiation next week so much going on here as well but never stop thinking about you and your wonderful family. I will cut you a check tomorrow and beckon for Jim to come pick it up. Keep smiling sunshine. All my love. Jenn Heller.
I know you're busy....but what about posting the pictures of you playing guitar and the giant Zebra sneaking up on you???? I know, I'm a slave driver , just ask Conner! The count down to college is this week, taking him up on Saturday....and somehow need to fit a birthday party for Evan in too...oh, yeah, and today is MY birthday! June! Ugh! Have a GREAT day! XOXOXOX Mrs. Holland
It was great to see you yesterday - looking better each time! We could all see such a difference! We could see a difference in the lighter spirits of your family too. Enjoy your time with Grandma and Grandpa - great chance to ask them questions about their life experiences, childhood, special things they remember. Your very fortunate to have them there with you. Love you sweetie, see you soon.
You have gone from hugging Lady Bugs,
to playing guitar. Now thats progress.
Glad to know you are getting better all the time.
I spoke to the rim guy and he will be able to get your rims from me next Thursday.
He stays busy,
Talk to ya soon,
What great news! Keep up the good work. These two weeks have flown by for us, although I am sure you do not feel the same way. But hopefully, you can look back and see what amazing progress you have made and can feel like you are well on your way to recovery. We continue to pray for God's healing and strength. Say hello to everyone for us. Love, Aunt Karen for all
Hey Michael, It was so great seeing you yesterday. Thanks for stopping by with your dad. You are doing amazing and look incredible. I would be curled up in a corner in the fetal position because I'm such a wimp (ssshh, don't tell anyone!) ... lol ... Someone a few posts down said to enjoy all this attention now because before you know it will be gone. I have a feeling you were never starved for attention before and won't be in the future. You're a sweetie and a great young man! Go take care of yourself and we'll see you soon. Jenn Heller ... oh Pam is sad she missed you yesterday, um, not that I rubbed it in or anything! lol ...
Michael, great update report and glad to see all the support you are getting with Grandma and Grandpa visiting. Now that we are back in Michigan, I am not getting as much golf in as we did before you graduation. Wish we could visit to have you drive me around on the courses and you will be out there hitting those long drives and making fantastic shots before long, Michael. Keep up the great progress and get your breathing exercises in each day. Love, Aunt Cindy and Uncle Dick
I have been following your journal for some time and I want to tell you what an amazing young man you are and please tell you parents what an amazing job they have done. You have already come a long way and it hasn't even been two weeks since your surgery. Hopefully this journal will help you with those blue moments, you wouldn't be normal if you didn't have them once in a while. Those will pass the stronger you get. My husband is eight weeks out from surgery and I can tell you that everyday will get easier. Take advantage of all of attention because before you know it things will be back to normal. You are in inspiration.
Hey buddy glad to hear everything is going well - not as fast as you'd like i'm sure - but pretty darn amazing. There will be plenty of time for busy stuff - try to enjoy your recup (recoup?) time - when you get to be my age you'll wish you had it again! see ya soon man....
So good to know you are sleeping better. Leave it to Grampa to solve the raised bed issue. Heard you were having pasties last night. I am so jealous! So many people from our church have asked about you and how you are doing. You had, and still have, an army of prayer warriors from Ohio. We miss you and wish we could be there to keep you busy! Jeremy would love to team with you to take on your Mom and I in Smear. Say Hi to all for us.
Love, Aunt Karen
Walk, walk, walk.... Just a little unsolicited advice for you from an old(er) guy. Don't know exactly where Ponte Vedra Beach is...but know when I've spent summer months at Montgomery, AL, the heat and humidity was, well, will say, really uncomfortable June through August. But, still was able to do some track work and other runs in the city for exercise very early in the AM, sometimes before the sunrise, and later in the evening, just before and sometimes after sunset. You are young and strong. I'm guessing...chk with your doc...the more walking you can do the better it is for you, and then whatever exercise suits you that your medical people approve...but, with the dog, with friends or family, or solo...do some progressively long walks to help you. ...barry on the mtn in NM
Please tell Grandpa that if he runs out of projects at your house, I have a few that can be taken care of at mine .. and you can rest in the guest room! :) Glad you're doing well. Just take advantage of being able to rest back to health and having all this down time. There will come a day that you wish you had all this time on your hands ... trust me, I know! :) Take care Michael. Jenn Heller
Don't be so hard on yourself stay positive and I know your grandma will keep you laughing. You are blessed to have so many wonderful friends and family in your life. Keep up your hard work. I will be out of town for the next 4 days so will look for your messages when I get back. Lots of love to you, mom, dad, grandma and grandpa!
We love you Michael. Blue days suck but are completely normal. Those of us, who have NO excuse, still have blue days sometimes. I just hate when that happens! When you are ready for a hug and a Cabana burger, let us know.
Miss Joni T
It was great to talk to you yesterday! I was glad to hear your voice, you sounded good! What a blessing!! Keep up the good work in your recovery and get Gramm out for a walk with you! Love you, Aunt Susie
Hey, Michael! Owen has been keeping us posted on your recovery. Blessings to you! You are in our prayers and we look forward to seeing you AND your folks one day soon. love to you and your mom and dad. wendee & sims rogers xoxox
Hey Michael. You never cease to amaze and inspire, do you? So glad to hear how wonderful you are doing. Pushing the buggy? Already? Amazing! I have some shopping to do tomorrow... You can tag along!! ;) keep up the awesome work. Xo Jenn Heller
Hi Michael! We had a great time last night visiting you! Were you as thirsty all night as I was from that Chinese food????? Boy, it was salty! I woke up today all bloated...probably how you felt in the hospital ;) I hope the drainage of Greg's knee was successful and he is on the mend. So nice that you were there for him! Hope Grandma and Grandpa got there ok! Hey, next week is Conner's 18th birthday and Vicky is trying to plan a little get together...I think she may have called you...it will be very low key...I'll make sure you know the details and maybe we can get you there for a bit! Love Mrs. Holland
Great job! Make sure you use your SI so your lungs get stronger. I am happy to hear your grandma and grandpa will be there to make you more and get well. You sound wonderful and poaitive. Keep up the good work and have fun with your grandparents and friends. i will say a prayer for you and your friend. Love you,
Good morning, Sunshine! That's funny that you used the word "surreal" to describe how you feel because that is exactly what I was thinking when Conner told me about his visit with you. The human body and mind are an awesome thing...and by the great gifts of God to talented surgeons and nurses and the bodies incredible ability to heal, here you are today! A week after major intrusions in to your boy, you're going to Home Depot! What's next, Disneyland!? Your positive outlook and the support of your loving parents no doubt is a contributor to how successful this process has been for you. Maybe "Dr. Bob's" check up helped too! Have another great day! Love Mrs. Holland (tell me when you are up for some spicy Thai Beef salad!, but first make sure you are able to get to the bathroom quickly if needed! ha! Again, the conversation digresses to poop! )
Hi Michael, Sounds like your energy levels are are getting back quickly. While thats great to hear and see, be sure to give your body the rest it needs--It's been through a lot!
Looks like you have made some good friends from reading your journal.Sure is nice to know how much support one has when you need it.
Keep up the good attitude and continued success of rehab. Looking forward to your updates and progress reports.
Glad to hear you got out some yesterday and got some rest! That would be great if you can make it into your bed soon! We have had now power here for 7 hours! Fun fun! It was Isabelle's last day of school today and Liv has her Dance Recital tonight. Been crazy here but will try to send pics over weekend. We miss all of you and can't wait til end of month when we come back down. Tata for now!
We're thinking of you, and praying for your comfort and healing. You're such a strong young man! We're so excited for what lies ahead for you. Don't rush, take your time. Stay patient and follow all the directions, try different things to get comfortable. It's a waiting game now. Find that book you've been wanting to read! We love you dear. God Bless!
So glad you are home. I am sure you are more comfortable there, for the most part, than in the hospital. I will be praying that sleeping becomes easier. Wish we were close enough to drop by. Hang in there. We love you.
Hallur! Krista and I woke up like 30 minutes ago. Haha:) we stayed up a tad late and have a funny story to tell you.
We hope your third night was better sleepin on da couch instead of the chair! We've had a lot of fun hanging out with you the past 2 days! Glad we could make thee feel betterr! :) just text us when you need your two nurses! Haha! Rest up! We luhh you!
As your Aunt and a nurse, I totally can understand where your coming from sweetie! Our bodies weren't meant to go thru such a thing! It is a painful process and the only thing that will make you all better is a lot of time!!! Every day that passes you will be one day closer to "back to normal" and no pain! Hang in there hon!! You are tough! Lindsey just returned from her 2 1/2 day college orientation! Wow....I can't believe you two are already done with high school!!! Time goes by fast.....remember that as you are recovering!! :) Love you!!! Aunt Susie
Michael, ...just read your journal today about the "....sugar coat..." stuff. Yep, we all have varing degrees of what you described. Seems like you have a good attitude about it, the discomfort/annoying stuff. I got all over the heart surgery related stuff, but still can't sleep on my left side without being careful about position because of a left shoulder rotator cuff (infraspinatus muscle) injury from the day in January 2010 I did four all out 25 meter swim intervals because it felt so good to try to go as fast as I could....a dumb thing for the old(er) guy to do. Jerry H had some good stuff to say. I'd like to add, when the time comes, be sure you do a cardiac rehabilitation program. I've never seen someone your age at the rehab I've attended, even the college/university age interns working there are a little older than you, but, none-the-less, it will help deal with some of the annoying issues that accompany cardiac surgery. I'm at least 50 years older than you and had my valve job repair on March 11th this year. If I was doing any better I'd probably be twins. The cardiac rehab program I attend now has a lot to do with how well I am doing. One of my heart surgery hero people is Ellen Charnley who had her atrial wall repaired in March 2010 and 8 1/2 months later completed Ironman Arizona, a 2.4 mile swim, followed by a 112 mile road bike ride, and finished with a Marathon, 26.2 mile run. Now, that is ultimate rehab in my book. She had several issues develop between the surgery and her Ironman event, and worked through them all. .....Barry on the mtn in New Mexico
I was just on here checking out things and saw your post. I had an AVR replaced on August 31 last year after coming down with endocarditis a year ago today. I'm 20 years older then you but I can tell you with complete certainty what you are going through will pass and you know what Chief it does suck sometimes. What seems endless will in a few months seem like a hundred years ago and you will get through this in no time.
As for the pain I have been there and it blows. Im sure your Docs told you it is especially bad for younger guys. The pain is pretty intense because your nerve endings haven't died off yet. That's why old women sail through this stuff. Your comments about sleep and waking up sweaty or cold really reminded me of that first week at home. I am not sure if you tried this but get every pillow you can and try putting them in a semicircle around you in the bed. This allowed me to rest my arms and actually sleep on my side with some support. As for the back pain that for me was the worst. Again it might sound silly but get someone to massage those knots out and if that doesn't help ask your doctor for a muscle relaxer. The pain meds are not the same thing. Obviously use some discretion with them but they will work with a lortab or what ever you are on.
Finally hang in there man and make sure you get outside in the sun some and use that sprirometer thing. It will really help with coughing and lung capacity.
You're doing great Michael. Everyone goes through adjustments after the surgery.Your body has been voilated! You had your sternum that was made in one piece broken and split wide open.
The pain meds in general are good but they put me out of my mind. I would take them in the hospital on a regular schedule--whenever the nurse brought them--and I would be asleep in a few minutes. I would have terrible dreams and would scare my wife as I would start getting violent and fighting with people (who were not in my room) in my sleep. When I finally woke up I was wet like I stepped out of the shower.
At the hospital and after I got home the only visitors I had was family. I was kind of disappointed that I didn't have company but on the other hand it allowed me to rest when my body said it was time.
When I got home I only took a couple more pain pills--mainly at night--and then slept in our bed with my pillow on top of a couple of blanets rolled up.
You sweet boy! Auntie Di has worked with many patients over the years and sometimes the recovery is difficult and comfort is difficult to attain. Everyday will become a little easier, I promise but you need to hold your incision and cough, laugh or do what you need to do to keep your lungs working. I was always a tryant to my patients post op to make sure they didn't get pneumonia. What is the pain medication? If you are not getting enough relief maybe the doc's can change the schedule the more comfortable you are the more you will move about. Don't be too hard on yourself you are amazing and recovering every minute of the day. Hang in there. I wish I could be there to nurse you back to recovery, but I am pushy. Your mom is the best and she is tough just like you! Love you sweetie!
What a blessing (and birthday present to your father!) to have you home so soon!! You are an inspiration to so many and we will continue to keep you in our thoughts and prayers as you heal your way back to iron man!! God bless you and your family!
Your aunt Karen sent me this link yesterday and the first news I receive is that you are home in the comfort of your new chair. When we were in Ohio, we followed the progress with the Hoppe's and it is amazing the progress you made in just this short time. You wanted to be home for your dad's birthday (today) and you made it!!!!! Rest up and your grandmother will also be there soon to help in your recovery (she will spoil you, you know). Michael, so many prayers for you and the skill of your surgeon allow you to be were you are today. We are all so very thankful and keep the wonderful progress reports coming. Love, Aunt Cindy and Uncle Dick
Half the time in surgery, half the time in the hospital. I will sign off now and leave room for friends and family. But, please know that you will continue to be in my prayers for half the time for a full recovery. All my best and God's blessings for you and your family.....Tobe'

Jim, Pam called me today because she was getting calls from people wondering how Michael was doing and our email server doesn't let us open attachments in our emails if we are not at the office. (long, goofy story) ... but, I let her know how GREAT Michael was doing and she was so happy and was passing on the word to everyone. Everyone at PV Club Realty is thinking of you guys and sending lots of love!
Michael, keep up the good work. We are all so incredibly impressed with your strength & courage. I took up roller blading today so you may have to save a space for me in the room next to you as I get used to these crazy skates! Hey, Michael, this is Gil Kerr. I have been reading all of the updates and am so excited for you and your parents that everything is going so well. Though it took a while for me to figure out how to send you this message, I think this technology is a fantastic way for people to keep up with how you are doing. When you get all your strength back, we'll have to play some golf with your Dad and Walter. I was going to suggest that me and your Dad take on you and Walter, but you would probably kick our butts! In any case, keep all those updates coming....and keep up all the great progress with your recovery. All our best from all of the Kerrs....!

India, Joe and I were thinking of driving over to G'Ville to see you on Sunday. Are you up for that? Let know and we'll be there. All our love, Ms. Joni
Ahhhh Mikey! I'm so impressed with your progress!! :) it's amazing how fast your moving but your so strong and that's why! My familiy (the Blakes :P) and I will be on the road veryyy soon to come see you! So rest up for us! Love youu
I'm so glad to hear that Michael is "cruising" through the recover process. He is younger than most of us--I was 40 when I had my aortic valve replaced at Duke. The younger the patient the faster the recovery.
We do serve a great and awesome God that is able to do way more than we can ever imagine. I hope things continue to go well for everyone and don't get discouraged if there are bumps along the way. The bumps are just part of the process to healing.
Good morning Michael! You are doing awesome, you little overachiever! You keep this up, you may just decide you DO like mountain biek riding at Hannah Park! Hah! Every day you will get stronger and stronger! Keep smiling! Love the Holland's
Good Morning Mikey,
The Blake Clan is trucking out to G-Vill today to see your Mom and Dad. Maybe you to. LOL
If you keep doing so well I won't be shocked to see you greeting people at the front desk. HaHa.
See you soon.
Hi Michael: I have TOF as well and am getting a pulmonary valve at the end of June. Love your verse you just posted - I think I found a new favorite. Praying for you to recover quickly....looks like He's already been answering.
Sounds like you are moving right along and doing great. We'll try to see you tomorrow if they let us in. Oh by the way, Erin has the twin pet pal to yours. Maybe he'll (she'll) come along with us to visit!
Way to go Michael you overachiever! Your first full day almost behind you and you are hanging with beautiful women! Love the lady bug. It's quiet here since all 7 grand kids have gone home. Grama and Auntie Cindy are enjoying seeing everyone but we are all pooped. Hope your night goes well and we will check in with you tomorrow morning. Oh Oh Grama just leaned, long and hard. You know what that means! Love Aunt Karen, Aunt Cindy and Toots.
Wow!!! Looks like everything is sure going great!! It almost feels like we are there in a small way through the pics and updates from you Linda! Thanks!!! I wish Michigan wasn't so far away......We will continue to pray for Michael's speedy and smoothe recovery. Tell him to keep up the good work!! Every day will be better than the last!
I have been thinking about you nonstop and i am very impressed by your strength. I have been making a huge list of movies and games for us to have adventures like we used to. I also cant wait for us to get you that full body tiger print tattoo, my treat. Take care buddy and get excited for the summer we'll have. I wish you the best and will always love you like a brother.
Now thats a man lady bug. I think I saw a skull tattoo in the picture. (Ha Ha) You just squeeze the stuffing out of it. It can take the pain so don't have to. You keep doing as the cute nurses say, and we will keep praying to keep you strong.
Remember, God answers KNEE-MAIL.

It's awesome that the surgery is now behind you and it's great to hear that it was such a success!!! I'm sure these next few days will be tough as you recover, please know we continue to think about you and pray for you. The photos your Mom posted give us a great perspective of what's going on since we can't be there with you.
Looking forward to seeing you at home and eating some more outstanding sushi!!! Keep your spirits up and RELAX!!
Michael, I am so glad to hear you came thorugh the surgery so well. I am a member of the Chancel Choir at First Bapitst downtown and we have had special prayer for you on two separate occasions - including last night. You can see your "choir family" on Channel 11 (cable) at 10:30 AM on Sunday mornings. We will continue to keep you in our prayers.
So… A mechanic was removing a cylinder head from the motor of a Harley, when he spotted a world-famous heart surgeon in his shop. The heart surgeon was waiting for the service manager to come take a look at his bike.
The mechanic shouted across the garage, “Hey Doc can I ask you a question?” The famous surgeon, a bit surprised, walked over to the mechanic working on the motorcycle.
The mechanic straightened up, wiped his hands on a rag and asked, “So Doc, look at this engine. I also can open it up, take valves out, fix’em, put in new parts and when I finish this will work just like a new one. So how come I get a pittance and you get the really big money, when you and I are doing basically the same work?”
The surgeon paused, smiled and leaned over, and whispered to the mechanic, “Try doing it while it’s running.”
Dear Michael, Jim & Linda, Just a quick note to let you know we've been thinking about you! Tina sent me the link to your online journal - pretty cool they do this! Praying for a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing you soon! Best regards, Darlene, Mike & Emilee McLean

Mikey, I would think if you have to wear the sexy blue cap and the nurse is wearing a cap, your Mom should wear one, too, don't you think? You are being very strong. And the best looking guy I've ever seen in a blue bonnet. : ) Hugs, Auntie Kim from Wisconsin

It was a very long day for them. But they held up beautifully. Their unwavering faith is such an inspiration. I know you can feel God's love through their love for you.
We'll keep checking in on you. Love JoAnne & Greg
ok, you know girls love a good 'scar story"...so you better think up something...the truth is goos...but something like " I was deeps ea fishing with my friend and he had this huge marlin on the line...as he was bringing it up, it was comeing straight for him...so I jumped in front of him and it basically impaled me...and that's how I got this scar.....:) Mrs. Holland...crazy, insane Mrs. Holland...
