Transcatheter Mitral Valve Replacement Explants: What Should Patients Know?

Transcatheter mitral valve procedures, including TMVR, TEER and MitraClip, can repair or replace the mitral valve without traditional open-heart surgery. In this video, Dr. Dominic Emerson, a cardiac surgeon and mitral valve specialist at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, explains these procedures and why some patients may eventually require an explant or another intervention.

Dr. Emerson discusses why surgically repairing a mitral valve after a previous TEER procedure can be difficult and why repair is preferred over replacement whenever possible. He also explains why patients with recurrent mitral valve leakage should seek an experienced Center of Excellence that can evaluate device removal, valve repair and surgical approaches such as sternotomy or minimally invasive robotic surgery.
