It\'s been about a year and a half since my valve replacement. I still workout on my exercise bike at least 3 times a week and do a strength and weight class twice a week. I just went to my 35th class reunion recently and boogied the night away. I still am trying to eat well, it\'s tough around christmas with all the temptations. I am so glad I had the surgery and got a new lease on life.

I\'m about 4 1/2 months post op. from a mechanical aortic valve replacement. This week I graduated from my cardiac rehab class with flying colors. I lost 20 pounds and decreased my body fat significantly. I learned a lot there and will miss the nurses and fellow rehabers who now feel like family. Now I\'m on my own. I\'ll keep this up with walking and buying an exercise bike. I also want to buy one of those heart rate watches. Does anyone have any recomendations?
Good luck to everyone who\'s coming out of heart valve surgery. You can do it. You will feel so much better too.

Wow I can\'t believe it\'s been 10 weeks already. Went to the cardiolgist on Monday. My echo was good and everything normal so I\'m going back to work next week. I\'ve been trying to build up my stamina because I know I will be tired next week. Cardiac rehab Mon. Wed. and Thurs. after work and I went back to my exercise class on Tues. and Fri. They were all so glad to see me back. I started back with lower weights and modified push ups and planks but I\'m just happy to start being myself again.
I will take it easy and will not stress back at work.
My well being is more important. Well back to the real world.

Got an A+ from my cardiac surgeon. He answered all my questions and everything I was experiencing was normal and it will get better. I guess this is new normal for a while. Yesterday I drove into town and went to Dunkin donuts and CVS. Had a little trouble opening the door and unscrewing the top off my OJ, but met a nice lady who helped me. It really makes you think just how much those little acts of kindness mean so much sometimes and we always need to pay it forward. I know this experience has made me more compassionate.

Today will be my first post op visit to my surgeon Dr. William Martinez at St. Francis. Tomorrow will be 4 weeks post op and also my birthday. I hope he gives me the OK to drive. It\'s hard when you live alone and are used to being independant. Just have to take it one week at a time.
Next week it\'s time to see my cardiologist and go to orientation for cardiac rehab. It will be good to get exercising again.

Did anyone else experience a lot of coughing when they came home? I seem to start coughing if I talk alot or exert myself. Guess my body is telling me to take it easy. I just don\'t want to get pneumonia or anything bad at this stage of the game.

I finally came home on Thursday. I had to wait for my
coumadin to regulate before they could let me go, so I ended up staying 8 days. I thought going home would be easier but it\'s way harder than I thought. No one told me about those lovely support stockings you have to wear and the number of medications you\'d be on when you get out. I had 6 new meds and am now taking meds from 6am till 8pm. When I filled them most were generic, so then you have to interperet that with the brand name. Very hard when you\'re tired and in pain.

I will be the 2nd surgery. That is good It will give Dr. Martinez a chance to warm up. I\'m a little scared of what the post op experience will be, but I\'m sure I\'ll do just fine. Did an hour of exercise today with my weights and push ups and planks. I know it will be awhile before I can do those again. Will take a nice walk in the woods with the dog tonight and clear my head.

I am having my aortic valve replaced this week. Waiting for the surgeon\'s office to call me as to when it will be. Found out Friday it\'s not today. Hopefully tomorrow. All this waiting is a little nerve wracking.
