I have an upcoming double bypass and valve replacement, and I'm wondering about preoperative conditioning with citicoline, NAC, and melatonin. I'm not on blood thinners, and none of these increase the risk for bleeding. Any inputs appreciated.

Robert Miller I have never heard of those medicines and I didn't have a bypass but just a valve repair. So the only thing I can say is that you should discuss this with your medical team. They for sure will be able to tell you about any possible incompatibilities with anesthesia, surgery, medicine you need to take after the procedure, when you should stop which medicine, etc. That's kind of a standard thing they do before surgery.

Marie Myers Personally,I would go off all supplements at least2 weeks before surgery. Many supplements can increase bleeding (even slightly) and it Is better to err on the side of not doing anything that possibly could contribute. I did, however, up my protein intake preop to get the best chance for good healing.

John Cook Talk to your surgical team. My docs had a schedule for me hold most of my current medications going into surgery. I had to go off all supplements about a week before surgery. They did allow me keep drinking camomile and hibiscus teas though.

Robert Miller What is the half-life time of those? I would think you want to get it below 10% but I don't really know. So with a half-life time of 1 day, it should take about 4 days to get down to that.
