I just watched a video where a Dr. Gerdisch (SP?) talked about, and advocated for, a baby aspirin regimen for patients who have had heart valve replacement surgery. Does the same advice apply to those of us who have had Aortic Valve repair surgery? Thanks.

Thomas Brusstar My cardiologist has me on a baby aspirin for my mitral repair, not replacement. There is an “annular ring” in there to stabilize the geometry at the base of the valve, so there is a bit implanted inside (albeit not really a moving part).

Richard Munson I am planning to bring up this very similar but not exactly the same subject at next months cardiologist appointment with a little twist to it. I had zero symptomatic a fib prior to my mitral valve repair and maze procedure now going on 2 years. My implanted a fib detector shows no a fib since. My question will be: why am i still on eliquis twice a day. I know he will say its to protect me from a stroke if i have an a fib incident. Have not thought about my response.

Thomas Brusstar I was told the presence of a piece of metal (with a cloth sleeve or whatever) in my heart presents a small but increased risk of spawning a clot. So the dose of aspirin relates only to the implanted artificial bits, and reducing the clot risk. For people without that clot risk, the possibility of gastric bleeding from aspirin outweighs any benefit, so they stopped recommending “aspirin for everybody!” I know almost nothing about afib or Eliquis.

Greg Lewis Adam, have you ever done a piece on why most of us take Baby Aspirin?

Brady Busch It's been a little over a year since my aortic valve was replaced and mitral repaired.Along with taking Eliquis, which replaced Warfarin, about six months ago,my cardiologist wants me to take a low dose aspirin, once per day. There was post op AF and that probably was the main reason for the blood thinners.A pacemaker was also installed, which records the events and thankfully, most of the misbehaving heart beats went away after the first month, but the doctors want to be cautious.
