Hi all,
I had my aortic valve replaced (bovine bioprosthetic) and part of my ascending aorta/dacron graft in 2014. I've been following the progress of TAVR as a possible option for if/when the bioprosthetic valve needs replacement. My questions- 1. Is TAVR an option for a patient with a dacron graft on the ascending aorta? and 2. Is there any research being done on a bioprosthetic TAVR valve (as opposed to a mechanical valve)? I'm hoping to avoid blood thinners so that I can maintain an active (backpacking, etc.) lifestyle as long as possible.
This blog and the book were and still are a tremendous resource for me! Thanks Adam!

Gerald Poulton Hi Terry, if you had your bioprosthetic valve done in 2014 you should be good for a long time yet. They make a bovine prosthetic valve for TAVR, check under the Edwards site. The TAVR is used more in the US than Canada, here it is still used for high risk patients who they wont do OHS on. There have been some great advances with the TAVR and by the time you need one there should be a lot more, we are all hoping and praying for that. There should be no problems doing a valve in valve procedure with your bioprosthetic valve when the time comes.
