Thank you all for your words of comfort and support. It's a relief for me to know it is a common problem that can occur after surgery and that it can be sorted with medication.

Marie Myers I am sorry your brother developed a fib. Unfortunately, this is one of the more common post op complications that can happen. Hopefully, the medication will get the a fib under control soon, and he can continue to recover. You are a great sister to support your brother in his time of need. Be sure to be gentle with yourself during this time, and be sure to do some things that help your mental health during this stressful time!

Rose Madura Susan, you are a great sister to take such care of your brother. As Marie said, Afib is quite common after surgery. I had it off and on for six weeks after my surgery. I was treated with Amiodarone which I didn't like. The side effects were terrible but I viewed it as a necessary evil I guess. Stay strong, take care and keep us posted. ❤️🩹

Susan Lynn Susan - I sincerely think that heart surgery is equally, if not more, difficult on our caregivers. You've been given great advice from Marie and Rose. Just be there for your brother - the cardiac team will take care of everything else. When he's released, a good diet, rest, and short walks will do wonders for his recovery. We're always here to answer your questions - don't hesitate to reach out.

Sue Maize Susan, I can completely empathize—I have 2 brothers with disabilities, one who is intellectually disabled with some physical issues as well. Having gone through this surgery 5 weeks ago, I can imagine how hard it would be for your brother….but I also know how much easier it was knowing I had people to support me in my recovery. Two friends came to stay with me at different intervals for the first 2 weeks and I literally didn’t have to lift a finger—it was such a blessing. I’m sure you’ll be that support for your brother too so that he can simply recover. Do you have others who can share the burden with you? Remember, this is the toughest phase of recovery—we all feel awful the first week…poor sleep, poor appetite, soreness, nausea, but it does get better quickly. How is he coping with all of it—has he been anxious? Praying for you both! 🙏🏻❤️🩹 Please keep reaching out! 💕

Sue Maize Are you more worried about his physical health or his emotional health in all this? Physically, afib is awful to experience but the medical staff are good at managing it I’ve found—is he still in CICU? I’d understand too, if all of this was pretty overwhelming for him. If you can keep reassuring him that things will get better, he’ll probably accept that coming from you. 💕🙏🏻

Suelynn Hanegraaf Agree - keep reassuring him that he’ll get better and applaud every achievement, i.e., a walk in the hospital corridor, going to the bathroom by yourself. I could not have gone through two SAVRs without the support of my family, siblings and friends. I, too, developed a-fib my last SAVR - it’s common - good that he is in the hospital being monitored. You are an amazing sister! Don’t forget to restore yourself - take a break outdoors, browse the hospital gift shop, call a friend, etc! 💕
