Just a note to let you all know that Dr Lamelas of Univ of Miami is the greatest. He did a mitral valve replacement and a tricuspid valve repair in the same minimally evasive surgery. Six days later I went home and all is good now 6 months later. This is a modern medical miracle.
Asymptomatic Severe Degenerative Mitral Regurgitation
I have been to a cardiac surgeon DR Croft and he suggested That I do nothing and should wait till I have symptoms. I have read in many publications that would not be the best advice. I have set up a appointment for surgery with Dr Lamelas of U of Miami who has completed 7000 mitral valve repairs utilizing the Miami Method ( less evasive surgery) to repair my mitral valve. If this was you what would you suggest?

Richard Munson Russell take this to the bank. I am 80 and 2 years ago, your age by the way, i kept hearing that my mitral valve prolapse was getting worse but don’t worry you have no symptoms. ( shortness of breath, swollen ankles yada yada). Come back in 6 months for another echo. I also had a fib a symptomatic a fib. I finally said to these folks at esteemed mass general in boston that i was not coming back in 6 months for another echo that they were going to fix this before i became 90 and too old. So, long story long, by getting it done i was able to get minimally invasive, repair not replace and the maze for a fib. When they got in there they replaced some chords as well and said that the time was right to do it. So here we are a year and a half later and knock on wood doing pretty good ( no full marathons this week lol ) no afib recurrence i walk my new puppy 4 miles a day and do treadmill 1/2 hour , work full time, could it all fall apart tomorrow, i guess but for now, surgery was the right call. I forced the issue. Bottom line, you are your number one health advocate. It might be time for another opinion. You’r not getting any younger either. My surgeon specialized in this by the way. Good luck my man.

Klara Čičić Agree with Richard, same thing with me, "let's wait for a year or two...", And I already have symptoms, paroxsysms of Afib, large left atrium....🙈 If I haven't taken things into my own hands, my heart would unnecessary suffer for who knows how long ... Me and my husband went for second opinion, carefully went through official most recent heart surgery guidelines, publications and went through all my medical record and it was crystal clear I need operation ASAP. Good luck, be smart, ask for second, even third opinion...

RUSSELL BURDEN Hi all, I went to DR Lamelas University of Miami and he did the less evasive Heart surgery procedure, He not only replaced the Mirtal valve but also repaired the tricuspid valve in the same surgery (apparently never attempted). Six days later I went home and I felt great. Glad I did what I thought was right rather than just wait and see.. It is 6 Mmonths later and all is still great..
