I had a aortic tissue valve replaced 11 years ago and rather recently has begun to severely leak. So I’m now 67 years old and looking at another OHS to replace the tissue valve with a mechanical valve. I am wondering if anyone has any insight on if the recovery was more difficult the second time around

Rose Madura Hi Rick, welcome. At age 59, I had my aortic valve replaced with a tissue valve large enough to accept a TAVR in the future if necessary. This will prevent another open heart surgery. I also had root and arch repair and an ascending aorta with a Dacron sleeve. Do you know if that option is available to you? You may want to get another opinion from a different outfit just in case there are other options. God bless you and please keep us posted.

Larry Peterson No right answer here, Rick; at age 67 I had OHS in November last year to replace the aortic valve and a section of ascending aorta. I chose an Inspiris Resilia bovine tissue valve and was able to get a large size (27mm). I'm hoping to get 15-20 years out of this valve, then have it replaced through TAVR if I am still upright. I think tissue valves have improved quite a bit since you got yours 11 years ago. I was not wanting to go on blood thinners for the rest of my life, but others find it to be no problem. Good luck with the choice!
